Swine Influenza Now in the United States

At this time there have been no severe illnesses or fatalities seen in the United States. However, CDC and state public and animal health authorities are still in the early stages of the investigations.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Swine Flu Eight human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection have been identified in San Diego County and Imperial County, California as well as in San Antonio, Texas.

This strain of influenza virus is unique because it is a combination of swine, bird, and human influenza viruses.

Swine Influenza and Severe Cases of Respiratory Illness Reported in Mexico

CDC has NOT recommended that people avoid travel to Mexico at this time. If you are planning travel to Mexico, follow these recommendations to reduce your risk of infection and help you stay healthy.

(MEXICO CITY) - Map of Mexico According to the World Health Organization, the Government of Mexico has reported three separate events of influenza-like-illness. In the Federal District of Mexico, surveillance began picking up cases of influenza-like-illnesses starting on March 18th, 2009.

The number of cases has risen steadily through April and as of April 23rd, there were more than 854 cases of pneumonia from the capital.

German-Owned Ship Seajacked by Pirates Near Muqalla

Pirates seized the cargo ship early Saturday in the Gulf of Aden about 150 nautical miles southeast of the coastal Yemeni city of Muqalla.

(MUQALLA, Yemen) - MV Patriot Pirates sea-jacked a cargo ship believed to be German owned and/or flagged and captured its 17-strong crew overnight in the Gulf of Aden, a Kenyan official said Saturday.

"A 31,000-tonne cereal carrier has been seized overnight (Friday to Saturday) in the eastern part of the Gulf of Aden," said Andrew Mwangura, of the Kenya-based East African Seafarers' Assistance Programme.

Power Line Accidents Decline in 2008

The Oregon PUC monitors electric power line safety throughout the State.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon PUC logo The number of people injured after coming into contact with high-voltage power lines dropped slightly in Oregon in 2008 compared with 2007.

“We are very concerned that most of the accidents continue to involve individuals who are working near overhead and underground power lines,” PUC Commission Senior Electrical Engineer Jerry Murray said.

(TEHRAN / Press TV) - Iran`s Reza Aghazadeh Iran has proposed that a joint consortium to construct and develop light water reactor plants be established by Persian Gulf states.

The Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Reza Aghazadeh, made the proposal Sunday at Tehran's first international exhibition on nuclear power plants, 'the environment and sustainable development'.

Oregon Civil Air Patrol Initiates Response to Tsunami Drill

The CAP has performed similar missions around the Mt. Hood area, indicating key points for avalanches, debris flows and other geologic areas of concern.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Oregon CAP Cessna 182 search aircraft Oregon coastal communities are taking part in a simulated tsunami beginning Friday, and the Oregon Civil Air Patrol will be a participant in this unique exercise.

The statewide disaster drill is called Cascade Peril 09. Tom Traver with the Oregon CAP says it deals not only with the tsunami, but with the underlying 9.0 Megaquake that caused it.

Two million pounds of food is equivalent to 40,000 emergency food boxes weighing approximately 50 lbs. each. Each box is enough to feed a family of 4 for 3-5 days.
