Rescue Teams Mobilize to Help Fallen Mount Hood Climbers

It is believed the climbers in need of assistance are located just west of the Hog's Back, on a reasonably level portion of Mount Hood.
(MT. HOOD Ore.) -
A male climber on Mount Hood has reported from a cell phone that he and another climber who was climbing separately, had fallen, tumbling a distance estimated to be 300 feet.
The Clackamas County Communications Center received the call at 12:33 PM, according to Detective Jim Strovink with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
"This reporting male climber informed dispatch he was not injured; however, the other climber who had also fallen suffered some facial cuts, knee and elbow injuries, yet was conscious and breathing. Both climbers are reported to be dressed warmly and the weather conditions are comfortable."

Carlton Man Faces Manslaughter and DUII Charges From Quadruple Fatal Crash Near Pendleton

The driver was treated and released for minor injuries, then arrested on four counts of second-degree Manslaughter and DUII.
(PENDLETON, Ore.) -
A Carlton-area man is in custody at the Umatilla County Jail on multiple charges following an early Sunday morning crash on Interstate 84 about ten miles east of Pendleton that killed three men and a woman. Oregon State Police troopers are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Umatilla County District Attorney's Office and no more information is being released today.
Preliminary investigation indicates that early this morning at approximately 12:19 AM, a 1991 Chevrolet Beretta driven by 29-year old Jesse Cline of Hermiston, was westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 219 when it was struck from behind by a westbound 1999 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by 46-year old John Cole Carlgren of Carlton.
State Police troopers say the preliminary highway area of impact is on the right shoulder. After impact the Chevrolet traveled across the westbound lanes and came to rest on the left shoulder, and the Dodge pickup came to rest on the right shoulder.

Law Enforcement Agencies Plan Fundraising Event

It is a chance to assist two area law enforcement families who have met with tragic circumstances.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
The Salem Police Department and Marion County Sheriff's Office are holding a fundraising concert to benefit Salem Police Officer Tim Holm and Marion County Sheriff's Parole/Probation Sergeant Jake Greer and their families.
The concert will feature the Bryan Flannery Band and will be held at 7:00 PM on Saturday, October 25th in the auditorium of West Salem High School.
Officer Holm was on a motorcycle ride July 6th on his off-duty time when he became involved in a crash near Dallas, Oregon. He sustained a severe spinal cord injury and spent five weeks in intensive care and several more weeks in a physical rehabilitation facility. He is now confined to a wheelchair. Officer Holm's wife, Karen, is an English teacher at West Salem High School and they have two children.

Woman Gives Birth on Side of Oregon`s I-205 Freeway (AUDIO)

West Linn Police respond to I-205 south on an emergency child birth.
(PORTLAND, Ore.) -
There was a different type of excitement on Interstate-205 around 3:45 this morning when a woman went into labor in a car moving down the freeway.
West Linn Police Spokesman Sgt. Neil Hennelly, says officers Pat McConnell and Ed Friend received a call from dispatch of a motorist having a baby on I-205 south near the Stafford Road interchange. "The officers arrived within 3 minutes, however Olivia Grace had already been born," Hennelly said.
Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue arrived a short time later and checked out the child and her mother. Both were transported to Meridian Park Hospital, and they are doing fine. Hennelly says they were headed for the birthing center near Meridian Park.

UN Says Iraqis Head the List of People Seeking Asylum

The report also noted that an estimated 25,400 people submitted asylum claims to the United States.

The number of people seeking asylum around the world is on the rise with Iraqis being by far the top nationality in search of safety, according to a report published by the United Nations refugee agency today.
Some 165,000 applications were submitted to the 44 industrialized countries included in the report in the first six months of this year, and Iraqis made up 12 per cent of all asylum claims lodged with 19,500 applications and some 20 per cent of those petitioning Sweden.
