Tax Break for Wealthiest Oregonians Exceeds Lost Timber Payments

It is estimated that Oregon's wealthiest 1 percent will get 63 percent of all 2009 tax cut dollars going to state taxpayers.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - As rural counties in Oregon grapple with the loss of federal timber payments, a new study out today estimates that the tax break enjoyed by the wealthiest Oregonians as a result of federal tax cuts on capital gains and dividends exceeds the amount of the counties' loss.

The preferential tax rates will slash more than $350 million from the 2009 tax bill of the wealthiest 1 percent of Oregonians.

State Grants Means New Off-Highway Vehicle for Law Enforcement

The BLM also will receive a $49,000 planning grant to continue an inventory of Medford District roads and off-highway trails.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Law enforcement agencies throughout the world use ATV`s to reach people in off road locations. Sheriff's offices in 11 Oregon counties will receive state All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Program grants from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to help pay for law enforcement in off-highway vehicle riding areas.

OPRD has awarded $7.84 million since July 1st, 2007 for riding area land acquisitions, law enforcement and emergency medical services, riding area operations and maintenance, area development, planning, and safety education.

(GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba) - Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is among those facing charges over the 9/11 attacks against the United States. The Defense Department announced today that charges against five of the six detainees who are alleged to be responsible for the planning and execution of the attacks upon the United States of America on September 11, 2001 have been referred to trial by military commission.

Gas Prices Continue Record Setting Pace as Memorial Day Approaches

Each day seems to bring new record highs at the pumps. Will we see a national average of $4 per gallon for regular unleaded by Memorial Day?

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Memorial Day weekend, the traditional start of the summer driving season, is less than two weeks away, and gas prices continue to set new record highs almost every day.

AAA Oregon Public Affairs Director Marie Dodds says, "The statewide average for regular unleaded in Oregon jumps eight cents this week to $3.75, while the national average soars 12 cents to $3.73. The national average is just two cents shy of the peak price of $3.75 predicted by AAA earlier this year when crude oil surpassed $100 per barrel."

Female Oregon Soldier Killed in Iraq

She was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - The Department of Defense reports that 24-year old Corporal Jessica A. Ellis of Bend, Oregon was killed May 11th supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Jessica Ellis reportedly died in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when her vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.

Fatal Crash Sunday Near Dundee Leads to Arrest of Driver

Driver arrested over fatal traffic crash last weekend on Highway 99W south of Newberg.

(DUNDEE, Ore.) - 26-year old Leonel Zurita Loeza Police arrested the driver of a car involved in Sunday afternoon's fatal traffic crash that resulted in the death of a Dayton woman.

Carma Smith died when a vehicle driven by 26-year old Leonel Zurita Loeza crossed the center grass median on Highway 99W near Dundee, flew into the air and struck her car. Troopers arrested the man upon his release Monday afternoon from a Portland-area hospital.

Shooting Near Campus Places Portland College in Temporary Lockdown

The campus closure has been lifted, no students were hurt.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Portland Community College officials closed the Cascade Campus of Portland Community College and placed it in lockdown after a shooting in an adjacent neighborhood. At this point the lockdown at the community college has been lifted.

Portland Police confirm that they were sent to the campus after at least one shot was fired near Killingsworth and Albina streets in North Portland.
