Fatal Crash Kills One Near Dundee on Highway 99W

Motorists should avoid the area or expect delays. Highway 18 is open and has not been affected.

(DUNDEE, Ore.) - Oregon State Police are on the scene of a fatal traffic crash on Highway 99W near milepost 27. The area is about two miles north of Highway 18.

They advise that the highway is closed as a result of the crash. At this time the Oregon Department of Transportation is on the scene with a detour in place.

Mercy Corps` Top European Official Heads to Myanmar

Agency mobilizes team to assess needs and begin on-the-ground response, humanitarian access remains challenging.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The global relief and development agency Mercy Corps is sending its top European official to Myanmar, and hopes to have several other members of an emergency-response team in the country in the coming week. Mervyn Lee, executive director of Mercy Corps Europe, is expected to arrive early next week.

Once on the ground, Mercy Corps staff will work with partner agencies to help assess needs and explore opportunities to ease suffering in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis.

Portland Water Bureau Warns Residents Against Imposters

While the Water Bureau must make home visits in certain circumstances, a Water Bureau employee will never collect money from a customer at the home.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Be weary of any water district employees who approach residents for payment of late bills. The Portland Water Bureau was alarmed to find that a person posing as a Water Bureau employee successfully scammed $44 out of a customer last week. Showing up at her front door, the imposter demanded $40 from the customer in order to keep her water on.

Coincidentally, the victim was nearing a three-day shut-off period, a warning given to customers who have not paid their bills.

Help Could be En Route to Burma

UN appeals for $187 million to aid Myanmar cyclone victims.

(GENEVA) - Survivors of Cyclone Nargis in the aftermath of the disaster. The United Nations today appealed for $187 million to help provide humanitarian relief to some 1.5 million people severely affected by the recent cyclone in Myanmar for the next six months.

Launching the Flash Appeal in New York on behalf of 10 UN agencies and 9 non-governmental organizations, the UN’s top relief official emphasized that “the extent of the humanitarian catastrophe is enormous.”
