The Drive to Remember Fallen Officers in 2008

The 2008 Drive begins from in British Columbia and continue with stops in Seattle and Olympia, Washington, and Salem, Oregon.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Marion County Sheriffs Office Deputy Kelly James Fredinburg died in the line of duty. Oregon suffered the tragic loss of Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy Kelly Fredinburg on Saturday, June 16th 2007. Deputy Fredinburg was killed in a traffic crash while responding to assist another officer.

On April 30th, Oregonians will gather in Salem to honor Deputy Fredinburg and to remember all 190 law enforcement officers from the U.S. and Canada that were killed in the line of duty in 2007.

New Book by Willamette Professor Chronicles Unusual Presidential Tales

Professor Richard Ellis is the Mark O. Hatfield Professor of Politics at Willamette University.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Journey from George Washington to George W. Bush, a new book by Willamette University Professor Richard Ellis. No sitting president has visited Salem, Oregon, since Harry Truman in 1948. In contrast, between 1880 and 1923 six presidents came through Salem. The transportation revolution enabled Americans to travel farther and faster than ever before, so why did it result in presidents seeing less, rather than more, of their fellow citizens?

These and other puzzles in the history of presidential travel are explored in Presidential Travel: The Journey from George Washington to George W. Bush, a new book by Willamette University Professor Richard Ellis.

Inmate Dies at Oregon State Penitentiary

Adam Brown was serving a 19-month sentence for Aggravated Theft in Washington County.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem from the air. Oregon State Police detectives are investigating an inmate death at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem.

On April 26th, 27-year old inmate Adam Brown was found to be unresponsive while in a holding cell in the Penitentiary's disciplinary segregation unit. Mr. Brown was transported to Salem Hospital where he was declared deceased.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Texas Congressman Ron Paul K.K. Forss does not claim medical marijuana solves all his problems. His pain from a ruptured disc in his neck is debilitating. He is unable to go to work or to the church he used to attend because of the pain and spasms.

Taxpayers through Medicare spend over $18,000 a year on his various medications. Half of those drugs are strong narcotics. Marijuana would not completely address all his pain, but it made a tremendous difference.

State Says Child Injuries and Deaths in Oregon Have Declined

The reduction in child injury deaths to a multitude of efforts by individual people, community organizations and governmental agencies.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon has reduced unintentional injury deaths to children by 54 percent since 1995, according to public health officials in the Oregon Department of Human Services.

"Kids are alive today because action was taken to protect them," said Mel Kohn, M.D., state epidemiologist in DHS. "But while we celebrate this progress, we need to keep working because unintentional injury remains the number one killer of children."

Church Teacher Arrested in Beaverton Sex Abuse Investigation

Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to call the Beaverton Police Department at 503-629-0111.

(BEAVERTON, Ore.) - 40-year old David Michael Schedin was a teacher and tutor at the Palace of Praise Church in Aloha, Oregon. Detectives with the Beaverton Police Department have arrested 40-year old David Michael Schedin on charges over having sexual contact with a juvenile female in the Beaverton High School parking lot on April 24th.

Sgt. Paul Wandell with Beaverton Police says the victim reported the abuse allegation to her parents, who was then reported to the Beaverton Police Department.

Miley Cyrus Semi-Nude Photo Takes Internet by Storm

Executives at the Disney Channel are furious about the shot, which is a far cry from the star’s usual squeaky-clean image.

(NEW YORK) - Miley Cyrus 15-year-old Miley Cyrus, teen idol and star of the Disney Channel show Hannah Montana, was pictured half-nude and topless, with only a satin sheet or blanket protecting her modesty for the June issue of Vanity Fair.

The photo was taken by famed celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz. Cyrus said that she was happy with the shot, declaring it "really artsy". But she has had a change of heart now that the picture is in the public domain.

Matt Maupin Honored in Salem at Afghan/Iraq Freedom Memorial

Madp IraqWarHeroes.org A soldier missing for years was honored over the weekend in Salem at the city's Afghan/Iraq Freedom Memorial. Sgt. Keith Matthew Maupin's parents had vowed to never let the U.S. Army forget about finding their son. His remains were discovered in March.

Their efforts included trips to the Pentagon and even meeting with President Bush. The The Army has not told the family where in Iraq their son's remains were discovered.

Police Investigate Report of Racial Harassment in Salem Mall

The man receiving the harassment apparently grew tired of it, and punched one of the white males in the face.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Racial attack? Police are investigating a bizarre incident at the Salem Center Mall Friday evening, that may have been racially motivated. A Salem-News.com employee was standing in a line at the mall's food court around 6:00 PM when a pair of white adults approached a lone black male adult in line.

The two white males who were described as "redneck" in appearance, walked up to the African American man and apparently began to harass him. This reportedly involved physically contacting the man and knocking the hat off of his head and our employee thought they heard the two white men refer to the man they were harassing as "boy".

(SALEM, Ore.) - Charlie Wilson`s War Charlie Wilson's War is a movie about the Texas Congressman who, along with a diverse band of allies, funneled a billion dollars into the hands of the Afghanistan Mujahadeen in the 1980's, allowing them to defeat at the time, the world's other top super power: the Soviet Union.

How could a band of rag tag, poverty stricken Afghans defeat one of the most advanced military systems for a billion dollars? Don't we fund the war in Iraq by the hundreds of billions? Yet the Afghans did it for one billion?
