Independence Students` Race for Hope Will Benefit Medical Teams (VIDEO)

A positive and inspirational video story about Oregon youth from Salem-News.com reporter Tim King.

(INDEPENDENCE, Ore.) - Marcos Ceja of San Antonio Restaurant gives the girls a donation to their fundraising effort to help Medical Teams International. Five high school students from Central High in Independence were inspired recently by a display they saw in Tigard, Oregon, from Medical Teams International called the Real. Life. Exhibit.

The five girls said they were highly impacted by the experience and now they are doing what they can to raise money for the medical teams.

Pandas Are A Salem Boy`s Last Wish

Dae Hon passed away May 1st, 2008 at 10:00 AM.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Cheryl Reynolds’ grandson, 10-year old Dae Hon Gonzales, was given 2 weeks to 2 months to live on March 5th, 2008. Dae Hon, of Salem, Oregon, was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrisic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) at the age of 9 1/2 years old.

Because this type of tumor is difficult to treat, the outcome for brainstem gliomas is poor. After diagnosis, the survival time is on average 9 to 12 months. Dae Hon was diagnosed almost one year ago, on July 23rd, 2007.

One of the recent ones was berating me for stating that a person on long-term oxycontin was an “addict”. She preferred the term “dependent”. I guess I must be an oldtime-pharcomologist. I’ve been at this for 60 years now. I have witnessed the switch from Laudanum to morphine, wrote about the sulfa drugs in 1940 before they were released, I remember penicillin production and first use.

The VA Wants to Kill Combat Veterans

It's time for a WAR ON DRUGS against the U.S. government and the Veteran's Administration.

(SALEM, Ore.) - One after another, we continue to receive horror stories about the VA's medical practices. They want to hook wounded combat veterans on hard pharmaceutical drugs that we have to pay for with our tax dollars, while denying them the one, solitary thing that can bring them relief: medical marijuana.

One vet who wrote just today, says after Iraq he found that medical marijuana helps him stay off hard addictive drugs. He still opted to enter the VA's PTSD program, and within weeks was off pot and addicted to three hardcore drugs that the pharmaceutical companies love to sell our government VA.

Police Arrest Man After Roll-Over Crash on Interstate 5 in Wilsonville

Two Salem women sustained serious injuries in the crash, though they are not considered life-threatening.

(WILSONVILLE, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Oregon Police state troopers arrested a 23-year old Portland man following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 southbound near milepost 283 in Wilsonville that seriously injured two Salem women.

Witnesses reported seeing an Acura Integra driving south at a high rate of speed and following other vehicles too closely just before the crash.

California Man Dies in Great White Shark Attack

"We are all stunned and deeply saddened by this rare accident," said Joe Kellejian, Mayor of Solana Beach.

(SOLANA BEACH, Calif.) - Andy Martin (left) and Dr. David Martin (right). A 66-year old Solana Beach, California man, Dr. David Martin, was attacked by a shark while swimming with a group of 9 others Friday morning at 7:21 AM. The AP reports that the man was bitten across both thighs as the group swam north from Solana Beach.

It is reported that some of the other swimmers realized what was happening and looked back to see the man under attack come up out of the water after initially being pulled under.

Two Crashes Leave I-5 Congested Near Wilsonville

Field-trip buses from 10 Salem-Keizer schools returning from Portland this afternoon may be delayed because of traffic on I-5: Auburn, Lamb, Pringle, Hallman, Sumpter, Richmond, Salem Heights, Candalaria, Yoshikai and South High Preschool.

(WILSONVILLE, Ore. ) - freeway crash Southbound Interstate 5 remains congested at this hour due to two motor vehicle accidents that happened around 11:15 AM this morning near Wilsonville.

Firefighters arrived to find two vehicles: a Toyota Forerunner, which had gone into the median and rolled several times before resting on its side near barrier cables, and an Acura Integra which had gone off the freeway on the right shoulder.

GOOD NEWS! Tax Rebates Start Going Out Monday

The IRS says that all checks will be deposited or mailed by July 11 to those who filed tax returns by the April 15 deadline.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - President Bush On Monday, the Treasury Department will begin delivering the first of these tax rebates by direct deposit.

During the first week alone nearly 7.7 million Americans will receive their tax rebates electronically. Then on May 9th, the IRS will begin mailing checks to millions more across America. These rebates will provide eligible Americans with payments of up to $600 a person, $1,200 for couples, and $300 per child.
