American Students Prepare for The Day of Silence (VIDEO)

Its a quiet, honorable tribute to young Americans who suffer needlessly because they are different.

(OXNARD, Calif.) - Lawrence King is a 15-year old who was shot to death in his classroom because of his sexual orientation. Organizers say the Day of Silence is a student-led day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and their allies.

This year’s Day of Silence will be held in memory of Lawrence King, a 15-year old student from Oxnard, California, who was shot and killed in class on February 12th by a 14-year old classmate because of King’s sexual orientation and gender expression.

Coast Guard`s Steadfast Returns to Astoria After 52-Day Patrol

Steadfast is a Reliance Class cutter, one of 14 in the Coast Guard fleet and one of only three based on the West Coast.

(ASTORIA, Ore.) - Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast The United States Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast (WMEC 623) returned to her homeport of Astoria, Ore., on Thursday from a successful 52-day deployment. The 210' cutter and its 75-person crew conducted Living Marine Resource enforcement off the Washington and Oregon coast.

During the patrol, Steadfast conducted at-sea boardings of 30 commercial fishing vessels, enforcing the Commercial Fishing Industry Vessel Safety Act and federal law. Steadfast also assisted in the enforcement of state fisheries regulations.

Overturned Truck Closes St. Johns Bridge in Both Directions

Officials now say the bridge will be closed until at least by 9:30 PM.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Crash investigation The St. Johns Bridge is closed in both directions following a crash involving an overturned truck, according to Oregon Department of Transportation officials.

Motorists that are headed for the St. Johns Bridge should instead use Interstate 5 to Lombard Street during the closure. There were no details on the actual crash, and it was not clear if there were any related injuries.

Iraqi River Police Trainers, Mechanics Graduate

Training consisted of hands-on training and reinforced with practical drills to allow the students to build their learning ability.

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - Iraqi Police Lt. Laith addresses the audience and graduates of the Trailer Maintenance and Driving Course held here April 24th, 2008. The Iraqi River Patrol Police station graduated seven trainers and five mechanics from the first ever Trailer Maintenance and Driver Course after six weeks of hands on training from an Iraqi River Patrol mechanic, April 24th.

Students learned the fundamentals of taking care of the trailer, tires and brakes. This course offers them a way to troubleshoot malfunctions of the trailer, tires or brakes and help them understand how the river craft operate.
