Oregon State Launches Largest Financial Aid Initiative

Awards will be based on financial need and students’ ability to show satisfactory progress toward completion of degrees, including taking 15 credits each term.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - oregon state university Oregon State University leaders have announced a new financial aid initiative that in its first school year, 2008-09, will enable a full 10 percent of the Oregonian students who attend OSU to do so free of charge.

The Bridge to Success Program will pool federal resources with funds from the Oregon Opportunity Grant, the Campaign for OSU and redirected institutional monies to cover all tuition and fee costs for 1,500 in-state students this fall.

Gaza Killing Prompts Call for Better Protection of Journalists

A journalist killed recently in Gaza was in a vehicle clearly marked as "press".

(GAZA STRIP, Israel) - Stop killing journalists The head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has called for improved protection of journalists, after a Palestinian cameraman working for the Reuters news agency in Gaza was killed when a missile hit his vehicle.

"I condemn the killing of Palestinian journalist Fadel Shanaa," declared UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura.

Fiery Truck Crash Halts Traffic on I-5 Sunday

Neither the driver of the truck or her passenger were injured.

(SPRINGFIELD, Ore.) - Crash scene near Eugene, Oregon 4-20-08 Police say a commercial truck was destroyed following a Sunday evening fire after it crashed on Interstate 5 southbound between Eugene and Coburg in a highway construction zone.

The driver and passenger were not injured, and the southbound lanes are anticipated to remain closed for about 3 more hours, according to Sergeant Ted Phillips with Oregon State Police in Springfield.

Mayday Alert from Sinking Boat May Have Been False, Coast Guard Says

The Coast Guard reminds individuals that false distress calls place unnecessary risk on would-be rescuers and interfere with legitimate search and rescue cases.

(SEATTLE) - U.S. Coast Guard rescueman The Coast Guard says crews responded to a mayday transmission today for a vessel taking on water in the vicinity of Kennewick, Washington.

They say the Coast Guard Sector Portland received a mayday transmission from a 19-foot green vessel reporting that it was taking on water with three people on board in the vicinity of Kennewick near the Pasco-Kennewick Cable Bridge at 11:00 AM.

New Technology in the Field Means IED Threats Should Finally be Reduced

Iraqi Security Forces obtain new counter IED system.

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - Iraqi military vehicle provided by the U.S. that will carry the IED jamming technology.  Courtesy: Iraqi Army Coalition military police forces here will soon be freed up on extra convoy duties that Iraqi security forces will take over. As of 2006 the Government of Iraq has engaged in a $51 million contract to purchase 411 Symphony counter-improved explosive device jammers.

After numerous technical and administrative delays the new units are finally going into the field, in the Baghdad area of operation.

Firefighters Safely Control Hazardous Materials Fire in Clackamas

2 alarm fire destroys business in Clackamas.

(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) - Industrial fire in Clackamas, Oregon 4-20-08 Fire officials say a passerby noticed a large plume of smoke while driving east on SE Jennifer Street in Clackamas at midnight. They followed the smoke to the business and called 911. Witnesses state that a large amount of smoke was coming from the eaves of the building.

Clackamas Fire District #1 responded to the commercial fire at 12:00 AM Sunday at 16569 SE 115th in Clackamas.

Awesome 3000 Early Bird Registration Ends Today

The 26th running of the Awesome 3000 is set for Saturday, May 3, at McCulloch Stadium in Bush Park.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Awesome 3000 Today is the early bird registration deadline for the 2008 Awesome 3000.

Runners can drop off forms through Saturday at Gallagher’s Fitness Resources or the Salem Family YMCA. Registrations postmarked April 19 also will be accepted. The registration fee is $17 per student, or $12 for the pre-school run.
