Walden and Hooley Act to Protect Oregon Against Medicaid Cuts

Governor calls on Congress to protect Oregon's most vulnerable.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - In the face of opposition by the President, Oregon Congressman Greg Walden and Congresswoman Darlene Hooley joined colleagues in unanimous support of a measure to halt harmful new Medicaid rules from the Bush Administration.

Bush's plan would substantially cut federal support to Oregon's health care safety net and shift large costs to Oregon. If implemented, the regulations would reduce federal Medicaid funds to Oregon by $163 million in federal fiscal year 2009 and by $865 million over five years.

Oregon City Man Identified as Home Invasion Murder Victim

The man killed in the incident is from Oregon City.

(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) - 32-year old Joseph Ryan Pankonin was killed last night in a Clackamas County home invasion robbery. The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office is now revealing the identification of the murder victim who died at the scene of a home invasion robbery/murder on South Maple Lane, in Oregon City.

The deceased male is identified as 32-year old Joseph Ryan Pankonin, whose last known formal address is listed on Bullard Street, in Oregon City.

Name of Victim in Salem-Area Death Investigation Released

Police hope to hear from anyone who might have information.

(SALEM, Ore.) - 64-year old Leonard David Payton was found dead March 4th in Salem, Oregon Oregon State Police in Salem say an investigation into the death of a previously unidentified man located by firefighters on March 4th 2008, has led to the release of his name. 64-year old Leonard David Payton was a transient with no address, according to records.

His remains were discovered by Salem Fire crews responding to a reported brush fire near the Interstate 5 northbound onramp from Mission Street in Salem that morning at about 2:20 AM. Police say they have not determined if his death was the result of a homicide.

Two Oregon Boys Arrested in Gruesome Goose Attack

The goose may lose the use of an eye after the boys were seen hitting it with rocks and the eggs she was protecting did not survive.

(OREGON CITY, Ore.) - goose attack Two 14-year old boys have been cited into Clackamas County Juvenile Court by an Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Division sergeant related to allegations of abuse and harassment involving a Canada Goose.

A witness reported observing two 14-year old boys throwing at and hitting a female Canada Goose with rocks while it was attempting to protect it's nest of five eggs.

Oregon 4-H Becomes Part of Operation Military Kids

Oregon has more than 10,000 people in the military with more than 6,500 children.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Operation Military Kids School-age children in Oregon who have a parent deployed in the military now have access to a program that provides support and activities through the Oregon State University Extension 4-H Youth Development program.

The mission of Operation: Military Kids is to support "suddenly military" children whose parents are deployed through the National Guard, military reserves or as active duty soldiers by creating networks of people and organizations where the children live.

Police say speed maybe a factor in the crash.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - fatal crash Salem police are investigating a Wednesday car crash that killed a 69 year-old Salem man.

Salem police say Gerald Freerksen was a passenger in a car driven by his wife, 66 year-old Linda Freerksen, when they were rear-ended by another vehicle on Highway 22.

5.2 Magnitude Quake Rocks Southern Illinois

The USGS says the largest earthquake in the region -- magnitude 5.4 -- shook in 1968.

(WEST SALEM, Illinois ) - Illinois quake A magnitude 5.2 earthquake rocked southern Illinois early Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenter of the earthquake was about three miles below ground, six miles northwest of Mount Carmel, Illinois, 38 miles north-northwest of Evansville, Indiana, and 128 miles east of St. Louis according to the USGS.

Police Investigating Home Invasion Robbery and Murder

Investigators report this residence may have been targeted by three suspects seeking money and drugs.

(OREGON CITY, Ore. ) - murder investigation Late Thursday evening, at 11:14 PM, a residential home invasion robbery and murder occurred at the address of 15275 South Maple Lane Road, in Oregon City.

One male adult was shot and killed during this robbery event, and an additional female occupant at this residence was reportedly physically assaulted during this incident. The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office wishes to assure neighbors and the community this does not appear to be a random type of act, and that illicit drugs and money appear to be implicated in this ongoing investigation.
