Kevin F. Walker is Named New President and CEO of the Northwest Area Foundation

Walker to lead Foundation in new strategic direction.

(ST. PAUL, Minn.) - Kevin Walker from the Northwest Area Foundation Today the board of directors of the Northwest Area Foundation announced the selection of Kevin F. Walker as the new president and CEO of the 74-year-old organization.

Walker replaces Karl Stauber, who resigned in June 2007 to become president and CEO of the Danville Regional Foundation in Danville, Virginia. Kari Schlachtenhaufen was named interim president in July 2007 and will continue to serve in that position until Walker joins the Foundation May 19th.

Pacific Ethanol Closes $40 Million Equity Investment by Lyles United, LLC

Company Obtains Necessary Waivers on Credit Agreement.

(SACRAMENTO) - Pacific Ethanol logo Pacific Ethanol, Inc. (NASDAQ:PEIX) today announced that it has closed the transactions contemplated under its Securities Purchase Agreement dated March 18, 2008 with Lyles United, LLC.

The Company sold (i) 2,051,282 shares of its Series B Cumulative Convertible Preferred Stock, all of which are initially convertible into an aggregate of 6,153,846 shares of the Company's common stock based on an initial three-for-one conversion ratio, and (ii) a warrant to purchase an aggregate of 3,076,923 shares of the Company's common stock at an exercise price of $7.00 per share, for an aggregate purchase price of $40 million.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber Former Governor John Kitzhaber kicked off OBA's most recent Board meeting with a challenge reminiscent of John F. Kennedy. "If you do not take the lead on health care reform - who will - you should."

Gov. Kitzhaber’s presentation titled Health Care Reform for the 21st Century focused on comprehensive review of the current health care system. He urged OBA to build the political will and sense of urgency required to begin implementing reforms.

Jacob `Jake` DeShazer - WWII Hero and Doolittle Raider, Dies

He is now known as a war hero to Americans and a hero of peace and faith to the people of Japan.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Among DeShazer’s many military decorations for service and bravery are the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart and the Chinese Breast Order of Yung Hui. One of Oregon’s best known WWII war heroes, Jacob “Jake” DeShazer, of Salem, Oregon will receive high honors during his funeral services, on Saturday, March 29th,. SSgt Jake DeShazer died peacefully at home on March 15th. He was 95 years old.

Jake flew as a bombardier on the 16th (of 16) B-25’s, from the WW2 aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Hornet, on April 18th, 1942, to be the first unit to bomb the Japanese homeland after the infamous bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Barges for Removing New Carissa Wreck Due to Arrive in Coos Bay

DSL has a contract with Titan to remove the wreckage by October 1st 2008.

(COOS BAY, Ore.) - The New Carissa beached near Coos Bay, Oregon Two barges owned by Florida-based Titan Salvage are due to arrive in Coos Bay around mid-afternoon on March 29th to begin removal of the wrecked freighter New Carissa which ran aground Feb. 4th, 1999.

The "Karlissa A" and "Karlissa B" barges – each 170 by 80 by 13 feet – will be moored at the Central Dock in Coos Bay upon their arrival.

Nursery Industry Responds to Homeland Security No-Match Rule Proposal

Homeland Security strikes out at Oregon agriculture businesses.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Sign from an immigration rally at the Oregon capitol Today, the Oregon Association of Nurseries responded sharply to the Department of Homeland Security's revised no-match letter policy, declaring that the proposal unfairly burdens labor-intensive employers with more onerous regulation.

They also say it creates an environment of suspicion in the workplace. The response came shortly after a conference call with 70 individuals representing employer groups from across the United States.

One Resident Hurt in Explosion as Fires Damage Salem Area Homes

Marion County Fire District responds to two fires, 3 minutes apart.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Fires in Marion County, Oregon 3-27-08 Marion County firefighters responded to two Salem area fires today with only three minutes between the calls.

The first callout involved an explosion in a residence that was blamed on an aerosol can being thrown accidentally in a fireplace, two people were injured in a related explosion. The second fire broke out in an unoccupied travel trailer and caused no injuries.

Black Ice Alert Issued in Portland for Next Few Mornings

Black ice is a thin layer of ice that remains on roads that are not getting direct sunlight.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - City of Portland, Oregon March is indeed going out like a lion! The City of Portland Office of Transportation advises the public to be alert for black ice the next few mornings, especially in the hills. Cold temperatures and moisture could create slick conditions for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

Night crews will apply anti-icing chemical in the hills tonight and Friday night. Crews will monitor conditions around the city over the weekend and respond accordingly.

UN Says Agricultural Neglect in Asia Leaves Hundreds of Millions in Poverty

The 2008 survey, entitled “Sustaining Growth and Sharing Prosperity,” calls for revitalization of agriculture through a focus on improving agricultural productivity and market orientation.

(GENEVA) - Chronic neglect of agriculture in Asia and the Pacific has left over 200 million people in extreme poverty amid rising prices for foodstuffs and despite robust growth in other sectors, according to a United Nations report released today.

The Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2008, produced by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), says that 218 million people – a third of the region's poor, largely living in rural areas – could be lifted out of poverty by raising agricultural productivity.

Oregon Studded Tire Season Extended through Saturday

Studded tires cause at least $11 million damage each year.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Studded tires Forecasts from the National Weather Service predict a slight rise in temperatures statewide beginning late this coming weekend, which may not provide enough time for motorists traveling this weekend to remove their studded tires by April 1st.

ODOT is extending the studded tire season through Saturday, April 5th. The Washington State Department of Transportation has made the same decision.
