In January 2009, Oregon's bottle bill will update to include water bottles.

Dear EarthTalk: I know there’s a big debate now as to why we need bottled water at all, but is anyone addressing the incredible waste of plastic bottles by this industry? -- Bert B., Dubuque, Iowa
ET: The plastic waste spawned by the recent astronomical growth in the bottled water business is significant. Environmentalists especially decry it because the water from our taps is usually as good as if not better quality than what’s inside the bottle (and indeed sometimes bottled water is just tap water).
Protests have meanwhile spread outside Lhasa and into the Amdo and Kham regions of China’s Qinghai and Sichuan provinces.

Chinese authorities have locked down the Tibetan capital as witnesses report spreading demonstrations in more remote areas and a climbing death toll after security forces fired on rioting protesters, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reports.
Sources in Lhasa said residents had been warned to stay indoors after the worst unrest in Tibet in two decades. Others described seeing tanks and armored personnel carriers in the streets.
Historically, there have been quite a few earthquakes that changed Oregon, luckily this wasn't one.

There was a big rumble out in the ocean this morning. The 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck about 112 miles west of Port Orford, at 7:44 AM PT. Luckily, it didn't cause enough of a stir to set off tsunami warnings in Oregon's coastal towns.
The quake was a depth of 6.2 miles, according to Angel Gutierrez, a geophysicist with the U.S.Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado. The USGS initially put the quake at 6.0 magnitude.
Heather Mallory is reportedly driving a bright red 2001 Ford Focus bearing Oregon license 061BZX.

Detectives from the Portland Police Bureau Missing Persons Unit are asking for the public’s help in locating 32-year-old Heather Dawn Mallory.
On Friday, March 7th, Heather, after work, spent the night socializing with several friends and arrived home at about 7:30 AM, Saturday, March 8th. After she arrived home she became involved in an argument with her husband and left home to avoid further confrontation and has not been seen or heard from since.
Stolen property from at least eight burglaries was recovered with a value of over $10,000.

Salem Police Detectives have arrested two suspects for burglarizing several homes under construction in south and southeast Salem since January and stealing appliances and fixtures that were either freshly installed or ready to be installed.
The stolen property included housing fixtures, stainless steel ovens, stove tops, dishwashers and microwaves. Arrested were 22-year-old Arturo Bautista-Contreras of Hubbard, and 22-year-old Jose Reyes-Mendoza of Woodburn.

The Salem Police Department would like to warn the public of a "Phishing" scam that criminals are using to try and obtain personal financial information.
The messages appear on e-mail or text messaging and appear to be from "security" and are entitled "ALERT." The text advises that "Your Bank of the Cascades account is closed due to unusual activity, call us at 8182928218."
