Series of Disaster Relief Measures Approved by Senate

Coastal delegation praises responsiveness to recent storms, commitment to preparedness.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
Legislators passed a series of bills on the floor today that address disaster relief for Oregonians. Partly inspired by the devastating coastal storms of December 2007, HB 3605 and HB 3606 will give relief to Oregonians in a declared emergency. Additionally, HB 3608 clarifies the role of Oregon in the Pacific Northwest Emergency Arrangement.
"We saw devastation throughout my district this winter," said Sen. Betsy Johnson (D-Scappose), "This suite of bills will offer real relief to Oregonians who are adversely affected by declared natural disasters."

There may have been plenty of competition, but the most beautiful place in Oregon Wednesday had to be Lincoln City; a seaside community on the state's central coast.
During the 80's Lincoln City still looked much like it had in prior decades, today it is very different. Upgraded buildings that include restaurants and motels and tourist facilities are matched by stunning oceanfront homes with sweeping views.

Dalke Construction Wins Fire Station Contract

All four stations were designed using the same floor plan for efficiency by Group Mackenzie Architecture of Portland.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
The City of Salem has awarded to Dalke Construction Company, Inc., a contract in the amount of $7,807,000 for the construction of new Fire Station Nos. 5, 7, 10, and 11.
In 2006, the residents of Salem passed a $24.72 million Fire General Obligation Bond that provided funding for fleet replacement, station construction, and station upgrades.

State Had More Job Losses than Gains in Second Quarter of 2007

The Oregon data show a long-term trend of declining job churn due to growing and shrinking businesses. The same trend is seen in new businesses and those going out of business.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
Oregon’s private sector lost 104,666 jobs in businesses that closed or contracted between March and June of 2007. It gained 101,225 jobs in businesses that opened or expanded.
The net loss of 3,441 jobs was the first quarterly loss since the second quarter of 2003, at the tail end of the last recession.

President`s Proposed Budget Cuts Would Hurt Oregonians and Shift Costs to State

Under the President's plan, Oregon would lose about $23 million for adult education and worker training programs.
(SILVERTON, Ore.) -
President Bush's proposed 2009 budget would cut over $200 million in federal funding for a slew of social programs in Oregon, shifting costs to the state at time when a weakening economy has shrunk state revenues, according to the Oregon Center for Public Policy.
The proposed budget would slash about $20 billion in spending nationally on domestic "discretionary" programs -- those that must be approved each year -- outside of homeland security, while making permanent all of the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts.

Stayton Discusses Skate Park During City Council Meeting

(STAYTON, Ore.) -
In opening remarks, Stayton City Councilor Grimes said that this city is not serving all the residents by limiting where people, namely young people, can congregate or recreate. He spoke about the need for a skate park and that currently anyone wishing to skateboard must leave town.
16-year old Colton Bradley spoke to the city about the need for a skate park so that young persons have a clean place to go and burn off energy and skateboard where it's legal. They say they are tired of being chased off from many places in the city that have banned skateboarders.
