Tonight`s Lunar Eclipse: Last for 7 More Years

The next eclipse is expected on September 28th 2015.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Moon eclipse, 2-20-08 A special visual display for people in the Northwest tonight; a total lunar eclipse was visible around 7:00 PM. Salem-News.com Photojournalist Kevin Montgomery snapped this shot from the McMinnville area, far from the city lights which obstruct visibility in the sky at night.

An eclipse of the moon takes place when the sun, earth and moon line up exactly in a straight line. The result is that the full moon slowly disappears, as the earth’s shadow, or umbra, apparently moves slowly across the moon from left to right.

DoD Succeeds In Intercepting Non-Functioning Satellite

Confirmation that the fuel tank has been fragmented should be available within 24 hours.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - This AEGIS warship, the USS Lake Erie, fired the missile that the Pentagon says struck the satellite A network of spaced-based sensors confirms that the military intercepted a non-functioning National Reconnaissance Office satellite which was in its final orbits before entering the earth's atmosphere.

At approximately 10:26 PM EST today, a U.S. Navy's USS Lake Erie fired a single modified tactical Standard Missile-3 hitting the satellite approximately 247 kilometers over the Pacific Ocean as it traveled in space at more than 17,000 mph.

Democratic Leaders Announce Funding of Key Priorities

The budget revisions are broken down into three general areas – general fund dollars, reallocation of DHS funding and Bonding/Capital Construction.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon State Capitol aerial shot by Tim King Salem-News.com Legislative budget leaders announced Wednesday that February 2008 session budget revisions will include investments in additional state police, long-term care facilities for seniors and people with disabilities, increased services for at-risk children, water supply projects and the Big Look Task Force.

Oregon's and House Majority Leaders say the budget revisions – which will leave a $32 million ending fund balance – fund the key priorities identified in the Senate Democratic Agenda and the House Democratic Road Map.

Report Shows Improvements in Oregon`s Public Health Emergency Preparedness Efforts

Oregon still needs to to improve in several areas in preparation for deploying a national system by which Oregon can rapidly bring in medications to respond to an emergency.

(SALEM, Ore.) - person on stretcher Oregon’s ability to respond to a public health emergency has dramatically improved since 2001, when federal funds for that purpose began to flow to states across the nation, according to a national report released today.

The report, compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, shows Oregon has made progress in the areas of disease detection and investigation, laboratory testing capabilities and planning, training, and exercising.

Lake Oswego Financial Advisor Will Stop Charging Aging Vets for Illegal Advice

Oregon AG files agreement with Lake Oswego financial advisor for illegally advising elderly vets and widows in nursing homes for a fee.

(SALDM, Ore.) - old man with dog Elderly veterans and their widows, Americans all too frequently taken advantage of, have one less problem in Oregon to deal with today. A Lake Oswego financial advisor accused of illegally taking fees to give advice to aging veterans and their widows has been stopped in his tracks by the Oregon Attorney General's Office.

While he doesn't admit to violating any laws, Robert F. Skinner, also known as Toby Skinner, owner of Toby Skinner & Associates, LLC, of Lake Oswego, has terminated a part of his business focused on advising elderly veterans and widows without being certified to do so and illegally charging for the advice.

For more than 150 years, these families have made it through bad weather, crop and livestock diseases, an unpredictable marketplace, and many other hardships that would probably wipe out a number of past and present business enterprises. The sesquicentennial farm families adapted to changes and challenges.

Arch Cape Cannons Safely Removed from Beach

It is possible they are remnants from the USS Shark a survey ship wrecked in 1846 off the Columbia River Bar, but a thorough review by qualified historians may take weeks or months.

(ARCH CAPE, Ore.) - Photo of two cannons found near Arch Cape, Oregon A pair of historic cannons have been removed from the beach near Arch Cape, Oregon. They were discovered by beach visitors over the weekend, and had been revealed by extreme low tides and the natural loss of beach sand due to winter storms.

Park staff, under the supervision of state archaeologist Dennis Griffin, transported each of the 800-1,000 pound cannon by truck to a nearby park office.

Rescued Fur Seal Leaves Aquarium for Sea World Friday

The seal’s destination will be warmer waters where she will remain in captivity.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - A rescued Guadalupe fur seal that has been in rehabilitation at the Oregon Coast Aquarium will be moved to her new home at Sea World in San Diego this Friday.

Guadalupe fur seals are protected in the U.S. as a threatened species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and it is the policy to make every effort to return threatened species to their habitat if the animal demonstrates the ability to survive on its own.

Portland-Salem Consumer Prices Rise 3.7 Percent in 2007

Annual average prices for medical care jumped 12.7 percent in 2007.

(SALEM, Ore.) - From 2006 to 2007 consumer prices in the Portland-Salem metropolitan area rose 3.7 percent according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. The U.S. city average for the same period rose 2.8 percent.

Salem Police Seek Help Finding Stolen Tricycle

Anyone with information regarding the theft is asked to telephone the Salem Police Department at (503)588-6050.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Stolen trike in Salem, Oregon 2-20-08 The Salem Police Department is seeking the help of the public in locating an adult tricycle, yellow in color, that was stolen from a handicapped man in the area of 12th and Commercial Street SE.

Police say the trike had been parked in a garage when it was taken. The owner of the trike used it daily to collect cans and pick up garbage, according to Salem Police Lt. Dave Okada.
