Missing WWII Airmen Identified After 64 Years

They apparently were buried during the war, but remained unidentified until recently.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Salem-News.com Three U.S. servicemen missing from World War II were recovered and identified in Europe. The Department of Defense says they will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

They are 2nd Lt. John F. Lubben, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin; Sgt. Albert A. Forgue, of North Providence, Rhode Island; and Sgt. Charles L. Spiegel, of Chicago, Illinois; all aviators with the U.S. Army Air Forces.

Arsonist Sets Car and House Ablaze With Residents Sleeping Inside

Anyone with information on the fire should call the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

(ALOHA, Ore.) - Fire investigation Firefighters and Sheriff's Deputies responded to SW Vienna Drive early Friday morning, over a reported vehicle on fire in a driveway. It was reported that the fire also caught the garage of the house on fire.

Sgt. Bob Ray with the Washington County Sheriff's Office says the fire appears to be intentionally started. "The suspect or suspects had already fled the scene," he stated.

Death Threats on MySpace Lead to Mental Evaluation for Oregon Student

Clackamas County Sheriff's respond to threatening information by taking subject into custody on a 'police officer hold' for a mental evaluation.

(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) - Images of Ben Cantwell, Oregon student MySpace threat suspect A student at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City is undergoing a mental evaluation after police say he left threatening messages on his MySpace page.

College officials notified the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office that the student had been posting what are described as threatening and disturbing comments on his site.

Long-Term Planning Directive for Senior Services Passes Senate Unanimously

SB 1061 directs Department of Human Services to create long-term plan.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon State Capitol by: Tim King Salem-News.com Continuing its commitment to supporting the needs of Oregon’s seniors, the Senate passed SB 1061 today by a unanimous vote. This bill directs the Department of Human Services to develop a comprehensive plan for long term care systems.

"This bill will allow the Department of Human Services to begin preparing for a tsunami of baby boomers that threaten to overwhelm the state’s senior services system," said Sen. Bill Morrisette (D-Springfield), chair of the Services to Seniors and People with Disabilities Committee.

Vernonia Flood Victims Search for Temporary Housing

The Lions Club as a special project to bring travel trailers to these families as temporary living shelters.

(VERNONIA, Ore.) - Vernonia, Oregon was seriously affected by recent floods as were neighboring communities. More than 60 families in Vernonia, Oregon are in need of temporary housing due to the recent flood damage last December. Reconstruction is underway for most of the damaged homes, but financial and housing assistance in the interim is slow or non-existent.

But crews assisting these families say they are in need of used travel trailers to put on their property while the repairs are being completed.

Additional provisions of the package secured help for struggling homeowners. In Oregon, interest rates for the ODVA ORVET Home Loan program are nearing 30-year lows.

(SALEM, Ore.) - American soldiers on a patrol in Kabul, Afghanistan President Bush has signed the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008. The economic stimulus package includes a cash rebate to recipients of certain veteran benefits.

Some disabled veterans and spouses who receive at least $3,000 from any combination of Social Security and certain veterans' benefits will receive rebates.

Death of Inmate in Salem Prison Ruled a Homicide

Antonio Barrantes was incarcerated in 2003 for Assault in the Second Degree out of Multnomah County.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Death investigation The Oregon State Police and the Marion County Homicide / Assault Response Team are conducting a death investigation at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem.

The inmate, 36-year old Antonio Barrantes-Vasquez, was found deceased in his cell at the Penitentiary on Thursday morning. The State Medical Examiner performed an autopsy today and determined the cause of death to be homicide by blunt force trauma.

Missing Person in Tillamook County Located

A missing person is located after an intense search.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Oregon Civil Air Patrol aircraft The Tillamook County Sheriff is reporting that the 45-year old man who was reported missing last night, and was the object of an intensive search today, has been found.

Oregon US Civil Air Patrol aircraft involved in the search have secured from their search operations and are returning to their respective bases in Salem and Brookings.

This proposal calls for an interstate compact that requires every state's electoral votes to be cast behind the winner of the popular vote.

(Salem, Ore.) - Salem-News.com In April of 2007, Governor Martin O'Malley of Maryland became the first to sign the National Popular Vote bill (NPV), enacting state legislation to guarantee that the presidential candidate who receives the most votes in all 50 states will win the Presidency.

The Maryland bill takes effect when states cumulatively possessing a majority of the electoral votes enact identical legislation. There are 538 electoral votes in total, and a majority is 270.
