What`s Behind Presidential Motivations to Blow Up Spy Satellite?

DoD says they will "engage" the decaying satellite with sea-based weapons.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Salem-News.com An uncontrollable U.S. experimental satellite which was launched in December 2006 is expected to reenter Earth's atmosphere between the end of February and early March.

Because the satellite was never operational, analysis indicate that approximately 2,500 pounds (1134 kgs) of satellite mass will survive reentry, including 1,000 pounds (453 kgs) of propellant fuel (hydrazine), a hazardous material.

Evacuated Prisoners and Staff Return to Santiam Correctional Institute

The prisoners and staff at the Prison east of Salem returned to a normal schedule at 1:15 PM.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com It is business as usual at the Santiam Correctional Institute in Salem, where a hazardous materials call led to the evacuation of between 250 and 300 people earlier today.

Spokesperson for the state prison Susi Hodgin, says the number of people evacuated was lower than earlier estimates of 450, as work crews were out of the facility when the incident happened and fire crews rolled in.

New Superintendent Selected for Oregon State Hospital

Orr is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and holds a Masters Degree from the McLaren School of Business at the University of San Francisco.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Roy J. Orr is the the new Oregon State Hospital superintendent Roy J. Orr has been selected as the new Oregon State Hospital superintendent, Oregon Department of Human Services announced today. Orr's start date will be February 25th.

In his new role, Orr will guide the state's multi-million-dollar psychiatric hospital replacement project, oversee improvements in patient care and operating systems within the hospital, and play a key role in the development of a new statewide continuum-of-care network for treating individuals with mental illness.

State Fire Marshal Sees Increase in Oregon Fire Fatalities

21 of the fatalities in '07 occurred in homes that did not have a smoke alarm or the alarm was not working.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Scene from a fatal fire in Salem, Oregon The Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal reports 43 Oregonians lost their lives due to fire in 2007. This is an increase from the 35 fire-related deaths in 2006 and the first increase in deaths since 2004. Overall in 2007, Oregon experienced 11.5 fire deaths per million population.

The state's figures fall slightly below the national average of 12.4 fire deaths per million population.

Suspicious Death Under Investigation at Oregon State Penitentiary

The name of the inmate will be released as soon as possible following next-of-kin notification.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon State Peniteniary The Oregon State Police and the Marion County Homicide/Assault Response team are investigating a suspicious death at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem.

Michelle Whitney Dodson with Oregon Corrections says preliminary information is that an inmate was found deceased this morning in his cell at the Penitentiary.

Hazardous Materials Call Evacuates Inmates and Staff from Salem Prison

Two correction personnel have been transported to Salem Hospital to be evaluated.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Both inmates and correction personnel have been evacuated from the Santiam Correctional Institution, a state prison in Salem, over a hazardous Materials call. Exact numbers were not yet available.

Firefighters were on scene at the institution at 4005 Aumsville Highway in Salem shortly after the call came in advising of a problem at the prison at 10:39 AM.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Healthcare The woman on the phone said she had no health insurance, and she wouldn’t be eligible for Medicare coverage for another couple of years. She said she takes good care of herself and is in good health, but her statement was nevertheless startling.

"I haven’t seen a doctor since 1995," she said. Nearly one Oregonian in six lacks health insurance and, although some are healthy and believe they don’t need it, many are desperate for coverage.

Missing 14-Year Old in Salem Located

The Salem teen was located.

(SALEM, Ore.) - 14-year old Abe Moorehead is missing in Salem A 14-year old student from Salem was reported missing to the Marion County Sheriff's Office early this morning. The family told Salem-News that the boy has been located and he is OK.

The family thanks the community for helping. The Marion County Sheriff's Office had been involved in the search. The parents of the teen told Salem-News.com that he was banged up but OK.
