Wet Weather Means Travel Chaos in NW (VIDEO)

Additional snowfall from the Cascades, southward through the Sierra and mountain ranges farther inland will be pounded with snow the balance of the weekend into early next week.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Accuweather.com weather maps The constant barrage of winter weather has created travel chaos in the Pacific Northwest. Interstate 90, the main east-west highway in Washington state, finally opened Saturday morning after an avalanche Wednesday buried the highway over Snoqualmie Pass.

Other mountain roads remain snow-packed and icy. A mixture of rain and snow was falling at sea level in the Portland, Oregon, area Saturday evening.

Record Number of Illegal Gambling Machines Seized in Lincoln County

Unlawful Possession of a Gambling Device is a class A misdemeanor.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Illegal gambling machines seized in Oregon, 2-2-08 State Police Lottery detectives in Lincoln County say they seized 250 gambling devices, including 244 slot machines, in a shop south of Newport. Detectives say this is the largest seizure of unlawful gambling devices in Oregon.

Balloonist Attempting Record Flight From Japan to Oregon Feared Missing (VIDEO)

Michio Kandia had checked in every two hours with a satellite phone. The last message was received shortly after he crossed the International Date Line, early Friday.

(JUNEAU, Alaska) - Missing Balloonist Michio Kanda The Coast Guard is continuing its search in the North Pacific Ocean for Michio Kanda. a balloon pilot reported missing approximately 435 miles south of Adak Island.

He was trying to top a long-distance world record of 4,767 miles (7,671 km) according to the Anchorage Daily News. Mr. Kanda was reported missing after he failed to check in with his support team by satellite phone, shortly after crossing the International Date Line.

Declaration of Domestic Partnership Forms Available Starting February 1st

It will take six weeks after the record is registered to be transferred to the Center for Health Statistics and entered into the vital records system.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Filling out form The Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) will make domestic partnership declaration forms available starting February 1st, following today's federal court ruling that allows Oregon's domestic partnership law to go into effect.

Completed, signed and notarized forms can be registered at any county clerk's office. Certified copies of declarations filed at the county can be purchased when they are filed or any time after the declaration is registered.

Federal Court Rules Oregon`s Domestic Partnership Law To Take Effect Immediately

(SALEM, Ore.) - crowd A federal court has ruled that Oregon’s domestic partnership law should go into effect, as it was originally scheduled to do on January 2nd, 2008.

"We won this case on the merits," said Jeana Frazzini, Executive Director of Basic Rights Oregon. "But the real winners today are the thousands of caring, committed couples who will have access to the rights and responsibilities of domestic partnership." Basic Rights Oregon had intervened in the case to assist the state in defending the law.

Police Arrest Man After Strange Encounter with School Transport Vehicle

Oregon State Police and Grant County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested a man on multiple charges Wednesday including DUII, Recklessly Endangering, and Menacing after an incident involving a school transport vehicle with two children on board.

(LONG CREEK, Ore.) - 55-year old Roy Eugene Mercer of Long Creek, Oregon Police say a Long Creek man chased and menaced a female school bus driver Wednesday afternoon who had two children aboard. Police caught up with the man and arrested him on several charges.

Trooper Marv Ritter with Oregon State Police, says it began when the bus was southbound on Highway 395 near milepost 92, around 4:20 PM Wednesday. The bus carrying the 12-year old girl and 13-year old boy, was moving down the highway when a 1985 Chevrolet Sprint passed the bus northbound.

Veterans to Receive Increase for Travel Reimbursements from VA

Veterans wounded or disabled in service to their country are able to claim this benefit when traveling in relation to a Compensation and Pension (C&P) Examination.

(SALEM, Ore.) - An increase in travel mileage reimbursement went into effect February 1st 2008 for certain veterans that travel to VA medical facilities. The reimbursement rate is the first increase in 30 years.

New rates are now set at 28.5 cents per mile, up from 11 cents per mile. A maximum deductible is set at $46.62, $15.54 for round trip, and $7.77 for one-way visits. Deductible amounts can be waived upon approval of financial hardship to the veteran. Deductible increases were packaged as part of the 2008 appropriations act.
