Oregonians are Smoking 41% Less According to New Report

Exposure to secondhand smoke also declined during the past decade, according to the report.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Cigarette smoking Oregonians smoked an estimated 2.6 billion fewer cigarettes between 1996 and 2006 as consumption decreased 41 percent during that time, according a report from the Oregon Department of Human Services Public Health Division.

Oregon outpaced the nation by 10 percent, as cigarette smoking dropped 31 percent in the United States during the same period, according to Oregon Tobacco Facts, released by the Oregon Tobacco Prevention and Education Program (TPEP).

New Brady Scorecard Shows Oregon Lacking Common Sense Gun Restrictions

Oregon voters strengthened its gun laws in 2000, closing a loophole by requiring Brady background checks on the purchases on all gun sales at gun shows.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Jim and Sarah Brady A watchdog group says officials in Oregon have done little to keep criminals and other dangerous people from easily obtaining guns, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the new redesigned scorecards are being released today for all 50 states.

Oregon earned just 18 points out of a total of 100.

Silverton Road Closed by Fallen Tree

A tree falls across a major street in Salem, closing the at the intersection of Silverton Road and Evergreen Ave NE.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Just after 7:30 AM this morning, Salem Public Works crews were called out to deal with a large Tree that had fallen across Silverton Road NE closing this major street in Salem.

As Salem Public Works responded to remove the tree, all four lanes of Silverton Road were closed in this area. Salem Police report that Silverton Rd NE is now fully open to eastbound traffic and partially open with one lane operating for westbound traffic.

Slides and Unstable Snowpack Keep U.S. 20 at Santiam Pass Closed

ODOT advises motorists to avoid traveling through the Cascade passes today because of expectations of heavy snowfall. Other conditional closures are possible if conditions worsen.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - File photo of another recent Santiam Pass closure in Oregon U.S. 20 will remain closed from milepost 75 to milepost 80 for most of the day because of the snow slides that occurred at about 6:30 AM. In addition, there is a high probability of more slides from slopes above the highway due to the unstable snowpack coupled with blizzard conditions and high wind gusts.

ODOT crews with snow blowers and snow plows are removing the slide debris that came down this morning, but it is snowing so hard that as soon as crews clear a lane, it quickly becomes snowed over again.

OCPP Finds Racial Pattern in Oregon`s Subprime Lending

OCPP's findings are consistent with those of a report released last year by six housing research and advocacy groups that examined five cities where Washington Mutual lends.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - Mousetrap signifying predatory lenders As the Oregon legislature prepares to consider stronger regulation of the mortgage loan industry, a new analysis by the Oregon Center for Public Policy has found a racial pattern in the state's subprime lending.

A state Senate committee hearing on SB 1090, which proposes to better regulate Oregon's mortgage industry, is scheduled for tomorrow.
At all income levels, Oregon's African American and Hispanic borrowers are more likely than whites to have received subprime loans, said OCPP.

Amber Alert Issued for Texas Girl

Authorities say the child was recovered.

(EL PASO, Texas) - This is the image Texas Police will illuminate on freeway billboards to draw attention to the missing child. The Amber Alert was canceled by the El Paso Police after the girl was found safe on Thursday evening in El Paso.

No information is available on the suspects at this time.

Canby Police Investigating Person impersonating a Canby Utility Worker

The residents did not see any Canby Utility vehicles in the area, but did see a dark colored older Honda car in the area.

(CANBY, Ore.) - Canby Police responded to Canby Utility January 25th on the report of a subject impersonating one of their workers. Canby Utility reported they had received a call from a concerned customer who resides in the 300 block of South Knott Street, regarding a subject that stated he was a Canby Utility worker.

Canby Police say the subject asked the customer to enter the residence to check the water for high levels of Chlorine. The residents asked the subject for identification and he presented an ID card that showed an emblem that would possibly match the Canby Utility logo, but it was older looking.

Man Seriously Injured in Crash with Commercial Trucks

Neither commercial driver was injured.

(KLAMATH FALLS, Ore.) - Crash near Klamath Falls, Oregon, 1-30-08 A Klamath Falls-area man was seriously injured and his 6-year old daughter received minor injuries Wednesday night when their pickup was struck by two commercial trucks on Highway 97 in Klamath Falls.

Following over two hours of extrication efforts by firefighters, the seriously injured man was removed from his pickup.
