Slides Close Oregon Highway 20

Transportation officials say motorists are advised to avoid traveling through the Cascade passes today because of expectations of heavy snowfall.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - Snow covered road Oregon State Police say Highway 20 is closed between Camp Sherman and Detroit due to slides in Santiam Pass area near mileposts 78 and 80. It is reported that the length of the closure is unknown at this time.

Navy Secretary Names Three New Virginia Class Attack Submarines

The Virginia class is 7,800-tons and 377 feet in length, has a beam of 34 feet, and can operate at more than 25 knots submerged.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Virginia Class Submarine Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter has announced the names of three Virginia class submarines -- the Missouri, California and Mississippi.

The selection of Missouri honors the continuous support of the military by the people of the "Show Me State," and its leaders. Designated SSN 780, Missouri is the fifth ship of the United States Navy to be named in honor of the U.S. state. The last Missouri (BB 63), a U.S. Navy battleship, saw action in World War II, Korean War, and the 1991 Gulf War.

DA and Medical Examiner Rule Death at Oregon State Penitentiary Accidental

The inmate has a reported history of escape, violence and non-compliance with corrections officers.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Marion County District Attorney's Office has determined that the death of Oregon State Penitentiary inmate David Schmidt on December 3rd 2007 was not the result of criminal conduct by Oregon State Penitentiary employees.

Oregon State Police investigated the facts and circumstances of the death. They say Schmidt's death occurred during a cell extraction necessitated when Schmidt refused repeated directives and became violent with Oregon State Penitentiary staff.

Oregonian Among Five Soldiers Killed at Mosul, Iraq

The deaths are a reminder that the War in Iraq is far from over for our nation' s war fighters.

(MOSUL, Iraq) - Iraq war casualties One Oregonian was among five soldiers who died from wounds suffered when their unit encountered an improvised explosive device during convoy operations January 28th in Mosul, Iraq.

21-year old Private Joshua A. R. Young of Riddle, Oregon died in the attack. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Oregon Lottery Scratch-its: The New Joe Camel

The Oregon Lottery calls the scheme a "promotional program" and is using shills from the media to maximize its slick PR campaign.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - Joe Camel Years ago, facing legal and political pressure for marketing cancer sticks to youth, R.J. Reynolds put out to pasture its infamous Joe Camel mascot. Today's "Scratch-it for Schools" campaign by the Oregon State Lottery may not sport a character with a hump, but its cynicism brings back memories of old Joe.

Last November, the Oregon Lottery, with help from the Oregon Department of Education, invited K-12 public schools to gamble on Scratch-it for Schools. This month, the Lottery picked 75 applicants to play the game.

Man In Serious Injury Crash Connected to Arson Fire

The resident of the home that burned was involved in a weather related single car crash as firefighters battled the flames.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Fire in Salem, Oregon at 1940 Lana Ave NE, 1-29-08 Salem Fire Department received the call for a structure at 1940 Lana Ave NE fire at 4:22 AM this morning and the first arriving crews found a mobile home and attached shed fully involved with fire.

Salem Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says firefighters battled the blaze at the home of 76-year old Donald Hirschy for over 15-minutes to keep flames from both burning structures from spreading to any neighboring homes. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the building of origin.

Oregon`s Average Drops Below National Average as Gas Prices Fall

It's unusual for Oregon's statewide average for regular unleaded is less than the national average.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Gas station attendant The national average and the Oregon statewide average both have fallen below the $3 per gallon mark for regular unleaded. AAA Oregon Public Affairs Director Marie Dodds says it's the first time in five weeks the national average has been below $3, and the first time since mid-October the Oregon average has been this low.

Portland’s average of $2.896 for a gallon of regular is the cheapest in the state, Salem follows with an average cost of $2.917 for regular. In Eugene/Springfield drivers are paying $2.933 at the pump and the average price in the Medford/Ashland area is $3.015. In Vancouver, Washington, motorists are paying $3.003 for self serve regular.
