Religious Leaders Celebrate `Equality Sabbath` in support of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Oregonians

Over 60 congregations to hold events throughout the region.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Welcoming Congregations Religious and congregational leaders celebrate the call to equality by observing Equality Sabbath January 25 – 27, 2008. During their regularly scheduled Sabbath observance, participating congregations will focus on themes of inclusion and equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

"This weekend reflects a spiritual act of solidarity," says Rev. Tara Wilkins, Executive Director of the Community of Welcoming Congregations and chief organizer of the event. "We feel that regardless of one’s sexual orientation or gender identity, we are all children of the same Creator."

Unprecedented Settlement in Class Action Lawsuit Involving Elder Care

New Medical Center Opens in Monmouth

The clinic will be open Mondays through Thursdays, 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM and 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Fridays.

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - Salem-News.com The Monmouth Rehabilitation Clinic of West Valley Hospital changes its name to Monmouth Medical Center, and opens at its new location at 512 Main Street, Suite 300, Monmouth Monday, January 28th.

The clinic initially will provide occupational and physical therapy. "Family medicine physicians are being recruited to staff the clinic in the future, in an effort to increase access to primary care for residents of Monmouth and Independence," says Eric Buckland, administrator of West Valley Hospital.

Soldier Killed During Korean War Recovered at Chosin Reservoir

Billy MacLeod was a member of Company B, 32nd Infantry Regiment, then making up part of the 31st Regimental Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division, operating along the eastern banks of the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Chosin Reservoir The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing from the Korean War, have been identified and returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

He is Private First Class Billy M. MacLeod, U.S. Army, of Cheboygan, Michigan. He was buried Saturday in Cheboygan.

Perseverance: Salem Woman Fights Deadliest Cancer from Multiple Treatment Fronts

(SALEM, Ore.) - Photos of Patricia Elwood courtesy: Pam McGaffin Patricia Elwood got the worst possible news after undergoing several different tests to find out why she was feeling pain in her upper abdomen.

Three of those tests failed to detect the "silent killer" growing in her body, but the fourth, an ultrasound, revealed a mass in her pancreas. She had cancer, and the prognosis was poor: Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of all cancers. Fewer than 5 percent of patients in the U.S. live longer than five years, and many die within the first six months.

Apartment Fire Blamed on Improperly Discarded Cigarette

Fire damages were estimated to be $5,000.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Apt fire at 1529 Salishan Street SE in Salem, Oregon 1-24-08 Salem Fire investigators say an apartment fire today at 1529 Salishan Street SE was started by a smoldering cigarette. Fortunately no injuries were reported as a result of the fire that broke out at 11:15 AM today in the 6-plex unit.

Salem Fire Spokesperson Chris Riffle says the first firefighters on scene reported that fire and smoke were seen coming from the exterior siding of the 2-story residence.

(WILSONVILLE, Ore.) - Avamere logo Avamere Health Systems CEO Bob Schneider and COO Brent Hutchings have announced today that Trey Malicoat, president of Avamere's Signature Hospice, will also assume the leadership of Signature Home Health.
