Police Say Man Was Arrested After Digging Grave

The man was held at gunpoint by a homeowner who discovered him digging the man sized hole.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - A possible grave site discovered 1-10-08 in Washington County, Oregon Washington County Sheriff's Detectives are seeking information in a case where a man was discovered digging what appears to be a grave.

Sgt. David Thompson with the Washington County Sheriff's Office says the man was arrested for trespassing, and detectives need to determine if anyone associated with him is missing or will be in danger if he is released from custody.

Stocks Fall 300 Points as Recession Worries Grow

Washington Mutual reports fourth quarter loss of $1.87 billion -- bigger than experts predicted.

(NEW YORK) - dollar bill Stocks took another big tumble on Thursday, as recession worries grow, Merrill Lynch announces huge quarterly loss, and as the U.S. housing and manufacturing sectors continue to slump.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell over 306 points to 12,159.21, 2.46 percent, its worst one-day point loss since early November. The Nasdaq composite fell 47 points to 2,346.90, 2 percent, and hit a 10-month low.

Pertussis Outbreaks in Oregon Point to Importance of Vaccinations

Whooping cough, a very contagious disease, begins as a mild infection with symptoms that resemble the common cold.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Bordetella pertussis In the wake of two recent outbreaks of pertussis (commonly called whooping cough), Oregon health officials are calling for parents to make sure they and their children are up-to-date on their pertussis vaccination.

"Pertussis is a very contagious disease that is particularly dangerous to children under the age of 5," said Susan Allan, M.D, J.D., M.P.H. One of the outbreaks occurred in Marion County affecting four people, including one adult.

Navy Helicopter Crashes in Texas; 3 Killed

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) - MH-53E Sea Dragon A U.S. Navy MH-53E Sea Dragon attached to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 15 crashed in a field approximately four miles south of Corpus Christi, Texas on Wednesday.

A Navy spokesman says three crew members onboard were killed, and another was taken to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition. At the time of the incident, the helo was conducting routine training operations.

Woman Dies in Traffic Crash on Highway 22E East of Detroit

Police say the highway was well sanded at the time of the collision and excessive speed is a possible factor.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - Fatal crash on Oregon Highway 22e, 1-16-08 An adult female was killed Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle head-on crash on Highway 22E about six miles east of Detroit. Oregon State Police Sergeant Michael Stupfel says the victim's name is withheld pending next of kin notification.

Investigators say that at approximately 2:26 PM, a 1988 Ford Mustang driven by the victim was eastbound on Highway 22E near milepost 59 negotiating a right curve it lost control and crossed the center line where it crashed head-on with a westbound 1998 Toyota Avalon on the westbound shoulder.

Police Report Serious Injury Crash - Highway 395 north of Hermiston

Oregon State Police troopers from the Hermiston work site are continuing the investigation.

(HERMISTON, Ore.) - Crash scene near Hermiston, Oregon, 1-16-08 Police say a 15-year old Hermiston girl was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when she was ejected from the pickup she was driving as she attempted to cross Highway 395. Her vehicle was struck by a van about two miles north of Hermiston.

Teen Girl Struck by Multiple Vehicles and Killed on Freeway in Salem

One of three southbound lanes was closed for about 90 minutes during the investigation.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Pedestrian struck State police investigators say an 18-year old female died Wednesday evening when she was struck by two vehicles in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Kuebler Road in Salem. Sergeant Mike Stupfel with Oregon State Police says the woman's next of kin have not been notified and names of all involved persons will be released Thursday.

Stupfel says that just before 6:30 PM, a 2002 Lexus sport utility vehicle was southbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 252 in the far right lane when it struck the victim in the traffic lane.

Salem Apartment Fire Displaces Ten People

The Willamette Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross in Salem assisted 8 out of the 10 people who were misplaced from their homes. Holmstrom says 6 adults and 4 kids were affected.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Apartment fire in Salem, Oregon, 1-16-08 An apartment fire in Salem burned out of control for almost twenty minutes today as firefighters were forced to cut into the siding to reach and extinguish the flames at 3353 Willow Court SE. Salem Fire Department Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says units were called out at 1:42 PM to this fire at the Clark Creek Apartments.

He explained that an upstairs neighbor, Virginia Herrera, notice smoke coming out her stove vent. She called 9-1-1 and had her family evacuate.
