Salem-News Reporter Heads to War Again

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Salem-News.com reporter Tim King will go to Baghdad, Iraq in March to cover the war and report specifically on the progress and mission of the Oregon National Guard.

Tim spent two months covering the war in Afghanistan over the winter of 2006/07, embedded with the Oregon Guard in the Army's 41st Brigade Combat Team. This time Tim will go to Iraq where hundreds of Oregon soldiers are stationed over the course of a year long deployment.

Indonesian Beaches Ravaged by 2004 Tsunami Still Eroding

Some roads constructed in the push for recovery after the disaster already are being threatened by eroding beaches and lapping water.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Indonesia beach The catastrophic damage of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was mostly done within a few hours, but that was just the beginning of a different process that may take up to a decade or more to complete – the stabilization of new beaches and landforms in areas ravaged by this disaster.

In continued studies, researchers at Oregon State University and the U.S. Geological Survey are finding that the beaches may continue to shift and change for several more years, as the lands adjust both to the tsunami impacts and the sudden drop of some nearby land by three to six feet.

Oregon Adopts New Driver License Issuance Rules

Temporary Oregon Administrative Rules take effect Feb. 4.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - oregon state capitol The Oregon Transportation Commission adopted new rules on Thursday, governing the issuance of driver licenses, instruction permits and identification cards.

Under the new rules, when a customer comes to a DMV field office to apply for a first-time, renewal or replacement card, DMV will electronically verify the Social Security number provided by the customer. “Current driver license and ID card holders don’t need to do anything until their card expires,” DMV Administrator Tom McClellan said.

No Injuries in Keizer House Fire

No damage estimate was immediately available and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

(KEIZER, Ore.) - Fire in Keizer, Oregon at 1554 Manzanita St., 1-17-08 Keizer firefighters responded to a house fire shortly before 6:00 PM Thursday at 1554 Manzanita Street NE. Fire Spokesman Jim Trett says the first fire unit was in route at 5:44 pm and arrived on the scene at 5:48 PM.

"Firefighters reported seeing heavy smoke and an orange glow in the area while approaching from five blocks away," he stated.

Kaiser Permanente Employees Honor Dr. King with Day of Service Fighting Hunger

Employees will also provide free medical care to uninsured patients, refurbish donated bicycles, prepare food, gather clothing and hygiene items for farm workers and paint school classrooms and community centers.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Dr. Martin Luther King Nearly 250 Kaiser Permanente employees from the Portland-Vancouver area will honor the memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by spending his national holiday volunteering to repack bulk food into family-sized portions in OFB's Maybelle Clark Macdonald Volunteer Action Center.

"We thank Kaiser Permanente for helping to fight hunger," says Rachel Bristol, OFB's CEO. "OFB faces a major food shortage due to declining donations from USDA and the food industry. Kaiser Permanente's donation and volunteer support come at a vital time as we work to fill the gap."

Keizer Fire District Honors Outstanding Service

Awards were presented to employees and volunteers with the Keizer Fire District.

2008 State High School Culinary Championships Scheduled For Feb 23rd

Stakes are high; the first-place winning teams will be flown, all expenses paid, to San Diego to represent Oregon at the National ProStart Student Invitational in April.

Victim Identified in Fatal Crash on Highway 22E Near Detroit

Police say the highway was well sanded at the time of the collision and excessive speed is a possible factor, but a driver who passed through the area right after the crash told shady areas were covered with black ice.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - Fatal crash near Detroit in Oregon, 1-15-08 We reported yesterday that a woman was killed in a two-vehicle head-on crash on Highway 22E about six miles east of Detroit. The woman involved in that 2:26 PM crash has been identified as 42-year old Cynthia Lee White of Redmond.

Investigators say she was driving her 1988 Ford Mustang eastbound on Highway 22E near milepost 59 negotiating a right curve she apparently lost control and crossed the center line where the car crashed head-on with a westbound 1998 Toyota Avalon on the westbound shoulder.
