Gas prices this week are down in all four of Oregon's measured metropolitan areas, and in Vancouver, WA.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Oregon gas pumps "The price of gas is down a few cents this week, as the price of crude continues to back further away from the record $100 per barrel set two weeks ago." AAA Oregon Public Affairs Director Marie Dodds says the national average and the Oregon average are only a cent-and-a-half apart now.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Top of Oregon state capitol State Sen. Larry George, R-Hillsboro, has filed suit to block the 2008 session of the Oregon Legislature in Salem. He claims he is 'defending the state constitution' but in reality it is nothing but a brazen attempt at political damage control.

The Oregon Republican Party has become used to getting its way. It dominated (some might say strangulated) the House for some two decades. Now they are out.. WAY out. In the Senate where George holds a position of greatly diminished power his side is outnumbered by around 2 to 1.

(SAN DIEGO, Calif.) - Marine mammal advocates say sonar is damaging to whales The Navy announced today that two important steps have been taken under existing law and regulations to allow it to conduct effective, integrated training with sonar off the coast of southern California after a federal court earlier this month imposed untenable restrictions on such training.

This is the seventy-seventh installment of the Salem-News.com original series "Nota Bene by Leonardo" by Salem cartoonist Glen Bledsoe.

(Earth-Neverland) - Nota Bene #77 Experience Change The contests rage. In a bizarre parody of reality television, the candidates for president perform their ritual dance of capability.

The slightest hesitation or fumble and his or her opponents strike. Sounds bytes are the order of the day. Simplistic messages are designed for the lowest common denominator so that believers can parrot them back. The messages may conflict, they may contradict, but they above all else must be short.

Study: Black Americans Should Get Reparations for Housing Discrimination

The researchers said the majority of young, first-time white homebuyers today receive money from their parents to help them afford a home.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Housing Discrimination poster Historic housing and lending discrimination against black Americans has created a significant discrepancy in their overall wealth – a gap that may take reparations to close, according to research published by two Oregon State University faculty members.

The researchers argue that the situation was created by government programs that deliberately made it much more difficult for black Americans to acquire homes at the same time they made it much easier for white Americans to acquire homes. The average black American has only about 15 percent as much wealth as the average white American, even though black Americans earn about 60 percent as much as white Americans.
