OWN's mission is to create multiple platforms for women, men and their families with a purpose and a passion.

(CHICAGO) - Oprah Winfrey In an unprecedented deal, Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications have announced plans to create "OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network."

The new multi-platform media venture will be designed to entertain, inform and inspire people to live their best lives. OWN will debut in 2009 in more than 70 million homes, on what is currently the Discovery Health Channel. The venture will also include the award-winning digital platform, Oprah.com.

The Oregon State Police have added entry level testing dates for interested applicants.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon State Police graduation Oregon State Police have announced two new upcoming Entry Level testing dates as part of the department's recruitment and applicant processing efforts for men and women interested in a career as an Oregon State Police Trooper.

Lieutenant Eric Judah with the Oregon State Police Training Division says that on Saturday, March 1st, and Saturday, May 3rd, OSP will be holding Entry Level Testing at West Albany High School.

Memorial Services Set for Oregon Soldier Killed in Iraq

The family has expanded an open visitation period and people can pay their respects Saturday, the family's service will be held Sunday.

(BEND, Ore.) - Zachary McBride The Memorial arrangements have been set for Sgt. Zachary McBride, a U.S. Army soldier who lost his life in Sinsil, Iraq on January 9th 2008 when he was struck with the blast from an improvised explosive device.

The Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 19th at 1:00 PM at the Eastmont Church located at 62425 Eagle Road, Bend, Oregon. As there is limited seating at the church the family has arranged for an Open Visitation at the Church on Friday from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and again from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

(SALEM, Ore) - Weather forecasters report that the Pacific Northwest will enjoy a break from the constant parade of storms the next couple of days, while southern California residents brace for a strong Santa Ana wind event Wednesday into Thursday.

Gusty winds across the northern Rockies are the result of the clash of high pressure off the Pacific coast and a low over Canada's Prairies. Rain and mountain snow fell Monday night in Washington and northern Oregon. Through tonight, heavy snow will shift southward through the northern and central Rockies.

Afghanistan: UN calls for Redoubled Peace Efforts in Wake of Hotel Bombing

They say the attack will not diminish the commitment of the international community to Afghanistan.

(KABUL, Afghanistan) - Salem-News.com The United Nations today called for a redoubling of efforts to bring stability to Afghanistan after yesterday’s deadly hotel suicide bombing targeting foreigners and Afghan civilians working together to help the violence-wracked country.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned "in the strongest possible terms" the attack, which killed at least eight people and injured a number of others at the Serena Hotel in Kabul, the capital.

Where is the Peacekeeping Machine for Darfur?

(DARFUR) - A UN Gazelle helicopter Right now, this peacekeeping mission does not have any of the 24 helicopters it needs to protect the people of Darfur.
Advocates say President Bush must do everything in his power to secure commitments from world leaders.

A hybrid United Nations-African Union command officially took control of the peacekeeping mission for Darfur.
But people on the ground there say the mission is already in danger of failing. While countless billions are used in the fight against Iraq, this African nation slides further into the abyss, needing only a few helicopters, of which thousands and thousands in the U.S. sit unused.
