Senators Say $1.2 Million Will Help Flood Recovery

Smith and Wyden toured the hardest hit areas of the Oregon coast immediately following the storm.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senators Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) U.S. Senators Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) announced today that up to $1.2 million in federal funds will be available for clean-up and recovery efforts in Oregon communities that have been devastated by recent flooding. The money will target the counties of Clatsop, Columbia, Lincoln, Polk, Tillamook, Washington, and Yamhill.

"This funding will help those Oregonians impacted by the devastating flood," said Smith. "Senator Wyden and I will continue to work together to bring the communities and families in Northwest Oregon the resources they need to help them get back on their feet."

Fund Established for family of Alma Garcia

The family is hard hit by this devastating event and they could use some assistance from this community.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Alma Garcia-Martinez A fund has been set up in memory of a fourteen-year old Salem high school student, Alma Garcia-Martinez, who died January 9th as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident two days earlier in Salem during freezing weather.

Alma Garcia as she was known to her friends, had attended Whiteaker Middle School in Salem and was a student this year at McNary High School in Salem.

Oregon Soldier Dies in Bomb Explosion in Iraq

Central Oregon Soldier is the latest casualty in Global War on Terror in Iraq.

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - Specialist Zachary McBride of Bend, Oregon An Oregon soldier named Specialist Zachary McBride of Bend, Oregon was killed on January 9th 2008 along with five other soldiers when a bomb exploded in a house while they were on patrol in Diyana, north of Baghdad, Iraq. The Soldiers were conducting a house-to-house mission in Baghdad. Four additional soldiers were wounded in the attack and evacuated to coalition forces hospital.

This was the first incident involving multiple deaths of U.S Soldier in Iraq since September 10, when seven Multi-National Division-Baghdad soldiers died and 11 were injured in a vehicle accident in western Baghdad.

Clark County Fire Crews Stand Down After Tornado

"If you live in the affected area, please stay inside if possible. As power is restored, there is the potential for live downed power lines that may be difficult to distinguish at night." - Leah Edwards, Clark County Fire

(VANCOUVER, Wash.) - Clark County, Washington Fire engine Clark County Fire District 6 in Washington scaled back operations at 7:00 PM in response to the afternoon tornado. Approximately 70 firefighters and 20 command center staff from nearly every fire agency in Clark County responded to emergencies associated with the Hazel Dell area tornado.

Spokeswoman Leah Edwards said most calls crews responded to were for property damage, downed power lines, and downed trees.

Kucinich asks for New Hampshire Recount

(DETROIT) - Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, an often outspoken advocate in the Presidential field and in Congress for election integrity, paper-ballot elections, and campaign finance reform, has sent a letter to the New Hampshire Secretary of State asking for a recount of Tuesday's election. He says it is important because of "unexplained disparities between hand-counted ballots and machine-counted ballots."

NOAA Rates Thursday`s Tornado in Washington as an EF-1

"In the big scheme of things this was not a monster tornado, but around here this is about as big as they get." - Andy Bryant of the NOAA

(VANCOUVER, Wash.) - Tornado art A tornado made a touchdown in Washington state today, knocking power lines out, ripping trees out of the ground, and blowing the roofs off of homes. It reportedly moved out of Vancouver and traveled northeast. Weather experts in the NW say the potential of the tornado causing more damage is very possible.

There were no reported injuries today in Washington, but KGW-TV reports that people have experienced extreme weather conditions including four-inch hail, high winds and dark clouds. Along with those conditions came numerous sightings of above ground twisters, or funnel clouds.

Pope and Talbot Announces Agreement to Sell Three Pulp Mills to Sinar Mas Group

Agreement subject to approval by US Bankruptcy Court and Canadian Court allows for competing bids to be considered before sale is finalized.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Pope & Talbot Pope & Talbot, Inc. (Pink Sheets: PTBT) today announced that it has agreed to sell three pulp mills to one or more affiliates within the Sinar Mas Group. The value of the transaction to Pope & Talbot is approximately $225 million, including the assumption of certain liabilities and $100 million of working capital proceeds that is not subject to the sale, to be realized after closing.

The three pulp mills, located in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Mackenzie, British Columbia and Halsey, Oregon are producers of high-quality softwood pulp.
