One Person Dies in Crash on Highway 213

Expect delays on Oregon Highway 213 or use alternate routes.
(MOLALLA, Ore.) -
Oregon State Police say a fatal accident has closed Oregon 213 near mile post 23. Highway 213 is notorious for fatal crashes and injury accidents.
Police report two vehicles were involved in this crash that left one person dead. The highway may be closed for several hours while police investigate.

Death Investigation in Progress near Florence

The body was severely decomposed and no identification was located.
(FLORENCE, Ore.) -
Oregon State Police and the Lane County Medical Examiner are attempting to positively identify the body of a male found Thursday afternoon under the east end of the North Fork Siuslaw River Bridge.
Police investigators at this point say that there does not appear to be any indications of foul play.

High Winds Overturn Vehicles, Closing Interstate 84 for Two Hours

No injuries were reported when several large commercial trucks tipped over this morning on the freeway east of Portland.
(PORTLAND, Ore.) -
Oregon State Police say Interstate 84 near Pendleton reportedly has reopened after being closed Friday morning due to high winds and poor visibility.
Three commercial vehicles and another vehicle overturned and some Oregon State Police vehicles were damaged by flying rocks.

Freezing Soldiers in Afghanistan Need Help From Oregon

Salem residents are going to pack at least 200 boxes for these troops and about 50 more for other units.

Soldiers with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in the remote mountains of Afghanistan are surviving cold and miserable winter weather conditions. With the extreme elevations in this country, these soldiers are supplied by airdrop and need to hand carry supplies to their camps from the drop zone.
Salem residents have an opportunity to restore some warmth in these soldier's lives on January 15th

Powerful Storms Will Slam the West Coast this Weekend

Snow fell Thursday in the mountains of California, Washington, and Oregon, with some locations picking up several inches.

A series of storms will slam the West Coast this weekend, causing many weather-related problems for the region. One storm started to impact parts of Oregon and California with rain, snow, and gusty winds Thursday, weather experts at Accuweather.com report.
Damaging winds will continue to pound the coast today as the storm intensifies and impacts the region. The storms will also buffet the coast and mountains with strong winds.

Missing Sailor from WWII Identified

The sailor was aboard a sunken cruiser, but his remains were found on a nearby island.
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -
The remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing from World War II, have been identified and will be returned to his family for burial with full military honors. He is Seaman 1st Class General P. Douglas, U.S. Navy, of Newcomb, Tennessee. He will be buried January 26th in Sneedville, Tennessee.
Military authorities say that on July 6th 1943, the light cruiser "USS Helena" was struck by torpedoes fired by Japanese destroyers off the coast of Kolombangara Island, Solomon Islands, in what would become known as the Battle of the Kula Gulf.

Early returns showed Iowa leaning toward John Edwards on the Democratic side, but then Clinton began edging in when 415 of the 1,781 precincts had reported. But as expected Obama took the lead as the state's favorite. The Iowa Republicans pick is Mike Huckabee.
The Iowa Caucuses are an important step during the years that a new U.S. President is elected. The Caucuses are an important step in the electoral process, and a reminder that our nation will soon have another Commander in Chief.

14 Injured in Crash on Highway 30 south of Scappoose

(SCAPOOSE, Ore.) -
a worker transport bus with eleven Hispanic occupants was on Highway 30 approaching the intersection with Rocky Point Road when the two left rear wheels came off. The vehicle's driver pulled the vehicle into the center left continuous turn lane median and stopped.
A Ford F250 pickup driven by 26-year old Jaramillo Gonzalez with two other occupants was westbound and struck one of the wheels, causing the pickup to veer to the left into the center median and crash into the back of the transport bus.

Fire Destroys Historic Nyberg House in Tualitan

The 102 year-old structure was once the home of the city's second mayor, John Nyberg.
(TUALITAN, Ore.) -
Tualitan lost a piece of its founding history overnight as the historic Nyberg House, home of one of the city's early mayors, was destroyed by fire. Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue was called out to the reported structure fire adjacent to the Big K Shopping Center off Nyberg Road in Tualatin at 11:30 PM.
Fire Spokesperson Karen Eubanks says the first arriving crews found heavy fire engulfing the first floor of the vacant and boarded-up historic Nyberg House, which is located an an overgrown piece of land near the I-5 and Nyberg Road interchange.
