Senate President Calls for Oversight Hearings on Foster Care

Courtney said he anticipates that DHS will conduct its own investigation into the allegations made in the report.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Senate President Peter Courtney Senate President Peter Courtney has called for Legislative oversight hearings into the practices of the Department of Human Services with regard to the use of powerful psychiatric drugs by children in state foster care.

A published report Sunday indicated that more than one-fourth of children in foster care in Oregon are taking prescription drugs designed to treat depression, anxiety, trauma and other mental health problems and the state does little to monitor their use.

Oregon, Nationwide Gas Prices Holding Steady

Gas prices this week have leveled out in all four of Oregon's measured metropolitan areas.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - man pumping gas Gas prices in Oregon remain flat, after skyrocketing this fall.

AAA Oregon Public Affairs Director Marie Dodds says, "The national average is $3.09 for the second week in a row, while Oregon's statewide average is again at $3.15 per gallon. Consumers are wondering what gas prices will do in the remaining weeks of 2008. Our best guess is that prices will continue to hold fairly steady."

The price of crude has fallen a couple dollars this week to around $95 per barrel after increased speculation that OPEC will decide at a meeting next week to boost production.

Western States Facing Waterways Inundated with Non-Native Fish, Amphibians

The most widespread non-native species were brook, rainbow and brown trout, which were found in 14-17 percent of the streams surveyed.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - trout image A new study by researchers at Oregon State University and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that more than half of the stream and river miles surveyed in 12 western states contained non-native fish and amphibians.

Oregon and Washington had fewer non-native species, yet 20-21 percent of the stream miles in the Pacific Northwest still had fish or amphibians that were not present when Lewis and Clark first explored the region.

For Veterans, Marijuana Can Mean Life

Switching from marijuana to legal "prescribed" drugs can be a killer.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Lynn Morse gravestone For one Vietnam Veteran in Illinois, a substance many call dangerous, medical marijuana, meant life.

When Lynn Morse used it he could function and cope, when he abandoned marijuana in order to "comply" with the VA and go on prescription drugs, he died.

His partner of 30 years, a pilot named Susan Tackitt from Marion Illinois is also a VA volunteer, and she has a few things to say about medical marijuana.

Remains of Air Force Captain Shot Down During Vietnam War Identified

Captain Stephen Rusch will be buried on November 30th at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II The remains of a U.S. military officer missing in action from the Vietnam War have been identified. U.S. Air Force Capt. Stephen A. Rusch of Lambertville, N.J. was a was the weapons systems officer in an F-4E Phantom II aircraft that was shot down over Laos.

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office made the announcement Tuesday. Captain Stephen Rusch was the weapons systems officer in an F-4E Phantom II aircraft lost while attacking enemy targets in Salavan Province, Laos on March 7th 1972.

Conservation Projects in Oregon and Mississippi Get Boost From Grant

The Nature Conservancy and Weyerhaeuser working together on the project.

(FEDERAL WAY, Wash.) - Oregon`s Willamette Valley The Willamette Valley in Oregon and the Old Cove area in Mississippi are the focus of environmental conservation efforts in year two of a five-year, $1 million collaboration between The Nature Conservancy and the Weyerhaeuser Company.

The Conservancy considers Oregon's Willamette Valley to be one of eight critically endangered ecoregions in the United States. Less than 1.5 percent of the valley is protected and managed for biological diversity.

Salem Woman, McMinnville Man Killed in Crash

Investigators believe icy roadways may have been a factor in the crash.

(McMINNVILLE, Ore. ) - OSP crash photo Two people died and three others received serious injuries following a Monday evening two-vehicle head-on crash on Lafayette Highway about six miles south of McMinnville.

At approximately 8:20 PM, a gold 1998 Pontiac sedan driven by 23-year-old Amanda J. McGinnis, from Salem, was northbound on Lafayette Highway near milepost 3 when it veered across the centerline into the southbound lane and hit head-on with a maroon 2004 Hyundai SUV driven by 53-year-old George E. Hatch, from Amity.
