Study Finds Combat Vets More Likely to be Unemployed and Earn Less

Higher rates of disability could be a contributing factor.

(VANCOUVER, Wash.) - Combat veterans from the military draft period --- those who fought in America's wars from World War II to Vietnam --- are less likely to be employed or to have been employed. If employed, they tended to earn less than either noncombat veterans or nonveterans of the same age.

Those are some of the preliminary findings of a study conducted by Alair MacLean, assistant professor of sociology at Washington State University Vancouver, and funded by the National Institute on Aging.

Toys Recall: Children Became Unconscious After Swallowing Beads

CPSC has received two reports over the past several days of children swallowing Aqua Dots and becoming ill.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Spin Master, of Toronto, Canada, have announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product.

Consumers should STOP using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. The coating on Aqua Dots beads that causes the beads to stick to each other when water is added contains a chemical that can turn toxic when many are ingested.

Rescue Underway to Get Passengers Off Grounded Cruise Ship

There are no reports of any injuries.

(PORTSMOUTH, Va. ) - The Coast Guard is responding to a cruise ship that ran aground this morning after taking on water in the Intercoastal Waterway near the Pungo region of Virginia Beach, Va.

The cruise ship Spirit of Nantucket with 66 people onboard notified the Coast Guard after the vessel began taking on water. The captain of the vessel purposely ran it aground to prevent the ship from sinking.

U.S. Blackhawk Helicopter Crashes in Italy; Five Dead

ANSA and Apcom news agencies said five people are believed to have been killed and another five were injured in the crash.

(TREVISO, Italy) - A U.S. Blackhawk helicopter crashed in northern Italy on Thursday and five people are believed to have been killed.

ANSA news agency said the helicopter was carrying about 10 people when it crashed in the countryside outside of Treviso.

Oregon Honors Veterans With Events Throughout The State

Veterans Day is a national tribute that traces its roots to World War I.

Mountain Search for Missing Oregon Professor Intensifies

The mathematics and statistics professor's car was discovered at a trailhead Tuesday.

(McKENZIE BRIDGE, Ore.) - The air and ground search for a University of Oregon professor missing since Sunday will get back underway this morning.

Searchers on the ground and in the air searched the Cascade Mountain foothills east of Eugene yesterday for 63-year-old Daming Xu. Lane County Sheriff Russell Berger says other hikers came forward yesterday, saying they saw Xu Sunday near the Ollalie Summit.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for the mid-Willamette Valley until 10:00 AM this morning.

The National Weather Service says widespread fog will continue this morning across the southern and central Willamette Valley. Areas of dense fog can be expected with visibilities at or below one quarter of a mile. The fog will lift to a low cloud deck after 10:00 AM.
