Discovery Crew Inspecting Shuttle Heat Shield

Discovery is also delivering a new crew member to the station.

(CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.) - space shuttle The STS-120 crew continues inspections of Space Shuttle Discovery’s heat shield and preparations for Thursday’s arrival at the International Space Station.

Crew members started the heat shield inspections at 6:39 a.m. EDT. They are using Discovery’s robotic arm and an attached boom extension to check the spacecraft’s nose cap and leading edges of the wings as well as hard to reach shuttle surfaces.

California Wildfires Force Nearly 1 Million From Homes; 3 Dead

The 15 wildfires have scorched more than 400,000 acres, destroyed more than 1,600 homes, killed three people, and injured at least 70.

(SAN DIEGO, Calif) - California wildfire Fire safety experts in California say as many as 900,000 residents will have to evacuate before a series of gust-driven fires complete their devastating path across the state.

The situation remains critical, fire officials say the 15 uncontained large fires have burned more than 400,000 acres. The National Interagency Coordination Center says dry and windy conditions will continue in Southern California through Wednesday.

UPDATE: One Lane Open on Highway 22 East of Salem After Fuel Spill

Crews are setting up signs on U.S. 20 and in Salem warning of the closure.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - salem traffic An overturned semi-truck has closed one lane of Oregon Highway 22 at mile post 47, about four miles west of Detroit.

Preliminary estimates indicate 150-200 gallons of fuel spilled onto the roadway. Oregon Department of Transportation crews are still clearing the roadway of the spill.

Police Launch Website for Children on Social Website Dangers

Site also gives tips on how to safely use cell phones, chatrooms and email.

(LONDON) - police website British authorities have launched a Website to warn children about the dangers of putting their personal information on social networking sites such as MySpace.

The site, setup by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, a British police agency set up to tackle child sex abuse, teaches children about the the dangers of revealing too much information about themselves online.

Space Shuttle Discovery Heads for ISS

Discovery and its seven astronauts have a tight schedule that calls for placing the new Harmony segment to the International Space Station.

(CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.) - Discovery launch NASA officials and launch managers were pleased Tuesday following a clean countdown and flawless launch of space shuttle Discovery from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Launch Director Mike Leinbach said the launch team at NASA's Kennedy Space Center was able to study a potential problem of ice buildup without jeopardizing the shuttle while still launching on time.

(MCMINNVILLE, Ore.) - The only flight of the Spruce Goose The Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum is honoring the one and only flight of the world-famous “Spruce Goose” at the flying boat’s home in Oregon. An entire day will be dedicated to the celebration in honor of the November 2nd 1947 flight.

Activities will include speaker presentations, special exhibitions and a 1947 themed hangar dance.

Oregon Man Dies in Two Vehicle Crash

The Highway was closed to one lane of travel for approximately 2.5 hours.

(JACKSONVILLE, Ore.) - Fatal crash scene in Oregon, 10-23-07 A Jacksonville-area man received fatal injuries Tuesday afternoon in a two vehicle crash on Highway 238 west of Jacksonville.

Police say that around 5:00 PM, a 1986 Suzuki Samurai driven by 51-year old Donald R. Smith of Jacksonville was westbound on Highway 238 near milepost 30 when, for unknown reasons, it veered over the centerline into the eastbound lane of travel and collided with a 2001 Kenworth Dump truck.
