Dow Plummets 365 Points on Credit and Housing Woes

The Dow has lost 4.2 percent since it's record close on Oct. 9th.

(NEW YORK) - Stocks fell sharply Friday, the anniversary of 1987's Black Monday, as investors shed a variety of shares on growing worries about banks, slowing corporate profit growth, the falling dollar and record-high oil prices.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost over 365 points, or 2.7 percent. The S&P 500 index (down 39 points) and the Nasdaq composite (down 74 points) both lost about 2.5 percent. The Nasdaq has lost 2.9 percent this week. This is the worst day for the Dow and S&P 500 since August.

Governor Announces Hunger, Health and Nutrition Initiative

More than 440,000 Oregonians – the majority of them children - receive food aid through the Food Stamp Program each month.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski has announced a new initiative to improve the health of Oregonians through improved nutrition.

The Governor’s Hunger, Health and Nutrition Initiative will be funded by $1.7 million in bonus funds awarded by the federal Food and Nutrition service in recognition of Oregon ’s outstanding work in providing food stamps to needy Oregonians.

Police on the Lookout for AK-47 Rifle Wielding Suspect

Police say Gordon has a long criminal history, and is considered armed and dangerous.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Washington County Detectives are seeking the public's assistance in locating Daniel Lee Gordon, they say he pointed an assault rifle at his ex-girlfriend last night. Although he no longer has the rifle in his possession, he is still considered armed and dangerous.

Sgt. David Thompson with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, says that at about 3:25 AM, 40-year old Daniel Lee Gordon kicked in the door of his ex-girlfriend's residence and entered the house holding an AK-47 assault rifle.

Bhutto Blames Blast on Islamic Terrorists (VIDEO)

More than 100 were killed in bomb blasts targeting the convoy of Benazir Bhutto the former prime minister of Pakistan.

(KARACHI, Pakistan) - The one ingredient that many people believe could bring an end to growing violence in the Middle East is the Prime Minister, a woman named Benazir Bhutto. She has been living in exile for the last eight years as the country has operated under the military dictatorship of Pervez Musharraf.

Her triumphant return to Pakistan, and to power, was marred by a pair of bombs that blew up near her convoy in Karachi last night. The prime minister was not hurt.

Yamhill County Conducts Domestic Offender Sweep

Crabtree says 2007 marks the 5th year of the event. As many as 190 Sheriff’s Offices from 30 different states participated.

(MCMINNVILLE, Ore.) - The 5th Annual National Family Violence Apprehension Detail was held in Yamhill County Thursday. Police from a number of local agencies banded together to conduct a domestic offender sweep.

The detail focused on warrants, domestic violence restraining order violations, and domestic violence release agreement compliance.

Congolese Refugees Aided by UN

(UNITED NATIONS) - Reacting to a humanitarian crisis which has driven hundreds of thousands of Congolese from their homes in the volatile North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the United Nations refugee agency today announced a new drive to transfer the displaced to safer shelter.

Jennifer Pagonis, a spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), told reporters in Geneva that the Congolese who have been uprooted by violence are being moved “from congested makeshift settlements with very difficult living conditions to a new camp set up by UNHCR which has the essential basic facilities.”

California Woman Dies in Crash Near Shaniko

Neither truck driver was injured. An adult female passenger in the Freightliner truck was in its sleeper berth and also was not injured.

(SHANIKO, Ore.) - A California woman died Thursday afternoon when her parked motor home that she was sitting in at a Shaniko area store was struck by a commercial truck that had been involved in a separate traffic crash on Highway 97.

General pricing for paperbacks and children's books is 50 cents each; for hardbacks, $1 each; and records for 25 cents each. Funds raised by the Friends of the Library through the sale and other activities support projects and programs at the Salem Public Library.

OSU to Create Statewide Emergency Traffic Management System

During the first year of the project, the focus will be on creating a unified incident management program for Oregon’s interstates and highways.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Oregon State University has signed an agreement with the Oregon Department of Transportation to help create the first step toward an “intelligent” statewide emergency traffic management system that coordinates and manages resources and communication.

During the next 18 months to two years, OSU software engineers develop components to a program that will unify the state’s five traffic regions, align communication between ODOT and the Oregon State Police, and better coordinate messages to the public.
