Train Derailment Cuts Off Amtrak Service to Seattle

Amtrak passengers will ride buses between Portland and Seattle today.

(TACOMA, Wash. ) - A train derailment Thursday morning near Steilacoom, Wash., has shut down Amtrak service between Portland and Seattle.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe says the derailment is near a ferry terminal in Steilacoom, which is located just south of Tacoma. The derailment has blocked both sets of tracks.

Strong Winds, Heavy Rain to Hit Oregon Coast, Valley Today

As of 10:30 AM: 1,360 Cowlitz County PUD customers have lost electricity and remain out of power. The areas affected are the Highlands area of Longview and South Kelso.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The National Weather Service says a High Wind Warning is now in effect until 5:00 PM Thursday for the north and central Oregon Coast.

A Wind Advisory is in effect from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM this afternoon for Salem, the mid-Willamette Valley, and the Portland-metro area. South winds will increase to 35 to 45 MPH -- with peak wind gusts of up to 65 MPH are possible in coastal communities -- and 80 MPH along the headlands and beaches.

Oregon Most Improved State in Campaign Disclosure Study

Overall, 36 states' disclosure programs earned passing grades in the 2007 assessment, while 14 states' disclosure programs received an F.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Access to state-level candidate campaign disclosure data continued to improve in states across the country, according to Grading State Disclosure 2007, a comprehensive evaluation of campaign finance disclosure laws and programs in the 50 states.

The 2007 study, released Wednesday by the California Voter Foundation, found that Washington State ranks first in the nation in campaign disclosure, while Oregon ranked as the most improved state in 2007.

Parents Invited to Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training

The training is titled “Recognizing Child Molesters - A New Approach to Protecting Children”

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Many girls and boys will be sexually abused prior to their 18th birthday. The offenders will typically be someone they already know - perhaps a relative, friend, neighbor or one of the many volunteers and professionals who come in contact with them every day.

The Salem-Keizer School District is hosting a sex abuse prevention training session this month to help parents keep their children safe from becoming a victim of sexual abuse.

Oregon War Pilot Inducted Into Hall of Honor

(SALEM, Ore.) - One of Oregon’s aviation “Finest,” and a past Director of the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs, will be inducted into Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum’s Hall of Honor at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 21 at the museum, 500 NE Captain Michael King Smith Way, in McMinnville.

Brigadier General Staryl C. Austin, Jr., a native Oregonian, completed 58 combat missions while flying the rugged P-47 Thunderbolt. His unit’s mission was air to ground support while destroying key German ground targets to pave the way for the Allies’ advance across France, Belgium and Germany.

Woodburn Firefighters Battle House Fire

The fire is under investigation and there is no damage estimate at this time.

(WOODBURN, Ore.) - The Woodburn Fire District responded to a house fire just before noon on Wednesday, at 1265 Young Street in Woodburn. A spokesman says the single alarm response was 3 engines, ladder and air support unit.

Firefighters from the first engine crew on scene said they found a room and content fire in an upstairs bed room. The fire was contained to the room and extinguished. Three adults were home at the time of the fire and exited the home without incident. No civilian or fire fighter injuries.

Veterans and War Memorials Grants Available‏

OPRD's Local Government Advisory Committee will review applications and recommend grants to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is inviting non-profit veterans' organizations to apply for 2008 grants to help build and restore veterans' and war memorials on public property.

The 2005 Oregon Legislature created and authorized the lottery-supported grants, which successful applicants can use to fund up to 80 percent of a project's construction or restoration costs. Organizations eligible for the funding must be based in Oregon, or, like the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, have chapters in the state.

Meth Raid Sends Two Albany Women to Jail

The raid was conducted by members of the Linn Drug Task Force consisting of the Linn County Sheriff's Office, Albany and Lebanon Police Departments.

(ALBANY, Ore.) - Two Albany women were arrested during a drug raid early this morning. Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller says the raid happened at about 5:42 AM.

"Seized during the raid were dealer quantities of methamphetamine, scales, packaging material, drug paraphernalia, computers, US currency, electronic currency counter and a firearm."

Salem Man Arrested in Fatal Weekend Stabbing

On Tuesday, Salem Police arrested 18-year old Evaristo Antonio Tenorio in connection with the stabbing of Esteven Zapata.

(SALEM, Ore.) - A suspect in a stabbing that happened Saturday in Salem has been arrested. Salem Police say the stabbing happened at 12:03 AM Saturday, October 13th in the parking lot of the McDonald's restaurant located on the corner of Lancaster Drive NE and Devonshire Drive NE in Salem.

Responding officers found that Esteven Zapata had been stabbed during this incident and had died shortly thereafter.

High Wind Warning Issued for Oregon Coast

Winds Thursday in the Salem-area could reach 45 MPH by the afternoon.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The National Weather Service says a High Wind Warning is now in effect until 5:00 PM Thursday for the north and central Oregon Coast.

A strong pacific low pressure system will bring strong winds to the north and central Oregon Coast late tonight and into Thursday. South winds will increase to 35 to 45 MPH -- with peak wind gusts of up to 65 MPH are possible in coastal communities -- and 80 MPH along the headlands and beaches.
