(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Former Vice-President Al Gore, who was featured in the acclaimed film "AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH" is the recipient of this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

Gore was Democratic nominee for President in the 2000 election, remembered as one of the most controversial races in the nation's history.

Recalling The Columbus Day Storm of 1962

East of Salem, the storm destroyed a historic barn that served as a meeting place by pro-slavery Democratic members of the state Legislature in 1860.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - A generation of Oregonians received searing memories during the Columbus Day Storm of 1962.

The quintessential windstorm became the standard against which all other statewide disasters are now measured. The storm killed 38 people and injured many more and did more than 200 million dollars in damage (over 800 million in today's dollars).

Sheriff Giusto Could Lose His Law Certifications

Spokesperson Jeanine Hohn says the DPSST respects the rights of all individuals involved, "and this letter in no way should indicate that a conclusion has been made."

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Sheriff Bernie Giusto of the Multnomah County Sheriff is in hot water. He has received a letter from the state agency that certifies law enforcement officers in Oregon that will likely spell the end of his position as Sheriff in Multnomah County.

The Department of Public Safety and Training Standards, DPSST, has informed Giusto that he has violated the established moral fitness standards for Oregon public safety officers.

Police Officer Shoots Attacking Dog‏ in Salem

(SALEM, Ore.) - A report of two vicious dogs running loose sent police officers to 1178 7th St NW today at about 12:15 PM. Salem Police Lt. Dave Okada reports that at least one of the dogs had already bitten a person and they were continuing to act aggressively.

"As the victim was on the phone with the police, the dogs were continuing to run about the area and were acting aggressively towards other people as well."

Keizer Police Seek Marijuana Plant Thieves

The stolen medical marijuana plants were almost ready to be harvested, and the estimated total value was approximately $15,000.

(KEIZER, Ore.) - Keizer Police officers were called out to a report of an armed person this morning at about 4:30 AM, on Newberg Drive North. Dispatchers say an unidentified male had called 911 to report a that neighbor he identified as “Anthony” had a gun in the backyard of his residence.

Turks Say U.S. Condemnation Will Lead to Serious Problems

The French Parliament committee passed a resolution last year that was similar, and not a single French plane has flown through Turkish airspace since that time.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The United States may be on the verge of seriously angering the Turkish government over a pending decision in the U.S. House of Representatives which would approve calling the Turkish killings of Armenians during World War I "genocide."

The U.S. has been warned by a high level Turkish official that consequences "won't be pleasant" if Congress approves the change. So far, the vote stood at 27-21 Wednesday, in spite of the fact that President Bush and other administration officials lobbied against it. A full house vote could happen as early as Friday.

Nine Missing WWII Airmen Recovered in Germany

Their trip home comes more than sixty years after their deaths.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of nine U.S. servicemen, missing in action from World War II, have been identified and are being returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

On July 7th, 1944, the men were aboard a B-24J Liberator that departed North Pickenham, England, on a mission to bomb a German aircraft factory near Bernburg, Germany. The plane was last seen by U.S. aircrew members in that vicinity. Captured records revealed that it had crashed near Westeregeln, about 20 miles northwest of the target in what would become the Soviet sector of a post-war-divided Germany.

Marines Raise Possibility of Pulling From Iraq

Unconfirmed reports indicated that the Marine Corps would rather take the lead role in the fight in Afghanistan.

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - News sources are reporting that the U.S. Marine Corps's commandant wants to pack his troops out of Iraq, and into the lead role to Afghanistan to battle anti-Coalition forces, while leaving the war in Iraq to the U.S. Army.

This could be some of the most revolutionary thinking since increasing numbers began agreeing that some kind of change is mandatory in Iraq. It was pitched behind closed doors, at this point Gates is denying the meeting and that the idea is on the table.
