Education of Children in Poverty Symposium at Buckley Center

The event is free and open to the public, but advance reservations are requested.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The University of Portland will host Beyond Ruby Payne: Poverty & the Education of Our Children on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Buckley Center Auditorium on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd.

The event will examine the strengths and concerns of Ruby K. Payne's groundbreaking book A Framework for Understanding Poverty, which is widely viewed as a powerful training workshop tool for educators dealing with children from poverty.

Live Creatures Featured at Salem Family Show

The show kicks off at 7:00 PM Friday, October 26th in Loucks Auditorium at Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty Street SE.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Families are invited to learn together about the creatures who share our planet. Kids and parents can see and handle a variety of animals under the supervision of trained staff at "Creature Features," presented through OMSI.

"Creature Features" is the first of the 2007-2008 Family Festival of the Arts series, offering free family-friendly shows on the third Friday of the month throughout the school year.

“There still exists a small number of dissident elements within our Party whose commitment to its ideals, beliefs, and political standpoint is a wavering one,” an internal memo of the Communist Party’s Commission for Discipline Inspection, leaked to RFA’s Tibetan service, said.

(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) - A woman suspected of embezzling more than one-million dollars over several years from this Estacada Rural Fire District was arrested today by Clackamas County deputies.

59-year old Pamela K. Rowley-Butcher was the Executive Financial Officer in charge of payroll for the Estacada Rural Fire District No. 69, located at 445 SE Currin Street, in Estacada.

Police Sting Takes on New Meaning in Milwaukie

Milwaukie Police say they're "mad as a hornet" after pursuit that leaves suspect and two officers with minor injuries‏.

(MILWAUKIE, Ore.) - Several police officers in the Milwaukie area received stings after a suspect they were pursuing tried to hide from them, near a hornet's nest.

This morning at 9:19 AM, a Milwaukie Police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a minor traffic violation on SE Railroad and SE 40th in Milwaukie. He said the suspect failed to yield to the officer and a short pursuit ensued.

Salmonellosis Outbreak Traced to Banquet Brand Pot Pies‏

The manufacturer, ConAgra, has suspended production and is instituting a "market hold" on all pot pies produced at their Marshall, Missouri, plant.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon consumers are being urged to not eat any Banquet brand pot pies following a large, multi-state outbreak of salmonellosis, state public health official announced today. Banquet brand pot pies are sold in the freezer section at grocery stores and other outlets throughout the nation.

The pot pies have code numbers beginning with "5009" or would have a "P9" code. Consumers are urged to discard the items.

Charred Remains in Car Probably Suicide

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office is releasing this information now to help ease community concerns over this suspicious and unfortunate death.

(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) - The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit Supervisor has announced that the arson-torched vehicle containing human remains - found in a remote area of Estacada last week, is likely part of a suicide case.

Investigators say they have contacted the immediate family of the registered owner of the incinerated vehicle, and have learned that the suspected deceased individual had been suffering from significant health problems.

Ostrich Attack Leads to Vengeance Killing

(SAN FRANCISCO) - A five-month sentence was handed down to a man this week for gunning down an ostrich that stomped on his pride, literally.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that it began when two men trespassed on an ostrich ranch south of San Francisco during a night of drinking last October, accompanied by female companions. After entering the property, the two men startled the bird named Gaylord, and were pummeled by the large flightless ostrich in front of their female companions.

Uganda Flood Victims Dangerously Low on Food

Massive flooding this year in Uganda has badly affected some 300,000 people, with crop losses in some areas as high as 90 per cent.

(UNITED NATIONS) - The United Nations World Food Programme is now warning of a shortage of funds for its relief operations in flood-hit parts of Uganda could spell disaster for hundreds of thousands of people there.

“The situation is dire for hundreds of thousands of people who have lost their homes, their belongings and most of their crops,” said WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran.
