Chinese, Oregon Researchers Find Body-Mind Meditation Reduces Stress

Study in China seen as launching pad for larger, more comprehensive inquiry on how meditation works.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - A team of researchers from China and the University of Oregon have developed an approach for neuroscientists to study how meditation might provide improvements in a person's attention and response to stress.

The study, done in China, randomly assigned college undergraduate students to 40-person experimental or control groups. The control group got five days of relaxation training. Before and after training both groups took tests involving attention and reaction to mental stress.

Coast Guard Saves Vessel With Broken Steering (VIDEO)

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - The Coast Guard assisted a disabled, 47-foot sailing vessel 100 miles west of the Central Oregon Coast over the weekend. The master of the sailing vessel Reverie contacted the Coast Guard via VHF radio just after 4:00 AM Sunday to report he had lost steering, officials say.

An HH-60 helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, Oregon, was launched along with a C-130 plane from Air Station Sacramento, California, to provide communications support and to track the vessel using its Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon.

Police Search Near Highland Elementary School (UPDATE)

The situation was resolved early this morning, district officials say the school never entered a lockdown.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - A Salem Police search for a burglary suspect near Highland Elementary School at 530 Highland Ave NE alarmed a few neighbors this morning.

Salem police spokesman Lt. Dan Dietz said the suspect, with stuff in hand, ran from police from a home in the area. The search was located on Broadway Street, Columbia Ave NE, and Maple Ave NE. K-9 units were dispatched to the scene.

Two Drivers Going Over 100 MPH Busted in Southern Oregon

According to OSP enforcement data, in 2006 OSP troopers issued 537 citations to drivers going 100 mph or faster.

(ROSEBURG, Ore. ) - An Oregon State Police trooper in the Roseburg area was involved in two high speed driver-related contacts Monday afternoon that led to citation or arrest of the involved out-of-state drivers.

The contacts were consistent with recently released statistics by Oregon State Police reflecting an increase in drivers cited for traveling at speeds 100 mph and higher, including a more than 20 percent increase in out-of-state drivers contacted.

Oregon TV Stations Band Together Tonight to Fight Meth

(SALEM, Ore.) - Marion County Sheriff Russ Isham and other Oregon law officials are urging local residents to fight back against methamphetamine by tuning into an unprecedented statewide television broadcast.

Oregon TV stations are banding together for the event and television stations throughout the state will simultaneously air the 30-minute documentary that highlights the devastation meth has on youth and families. It also reaches out to people struggling with addiction.

7 Dead, 3 Feared Dead in Wash. Plane Crash

The plane was reported missing Sunday night on a flight from Star, Idaho, to Shelton, Mason County.

(WHITE PASS, Wash. ) - Authorities say searchers have found seven bodies in the wreckage of a single-engine sky diving plane that crashed in the Cascade range.

The Cessna 208 Grand Caravan was carrying nine Snohomish-based skydivers and a pilot who were returning from a weekend outing in Idaho. The search for the remaining victims is expected to resume this morning, but authorities said it appears that no one survived.

Politicians Tour Salem At-Risk Youth Center

HOME Youth and Resource Center provides assistance to at-risk youth in job skills, education, GED preparation, and social skills.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Marion Soil and Water Conservation District Director Patrick Sieng (I-Salem) and State Rep. Brian Clem (D-Salem) are scheduled to tour Salem’s Heal Our Mentality and Environment (HOME) Youth and Resource Center in response to Marion and Polk’s 10-year Plan to End Homelessness initiative.

Sieng, who serves on the board of directors for the Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency, will tour the center Wednesday, Oct. 10th from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM with Clem and agency staff to begin looking at needs for area at-risk youth.

The person who holds the country in limbo is Senior General Than Shwe. His military government has been in charge of Burma since a 1962 coup led by General Ne Win. That victory brought an end to the civilian government of U Nu. Burma had been part of the British Empire since 1948.

Oregon Group Applauds Failure of Anti-Gay Measure

Oregon stays two steps ahead of the dark ages for the time being.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Anti-gay activists have fallen short in their attempt to force a referendum on Oregon's recently passed domestic partnership law. The Secretary of State determined that the petition did not meet the 55,179 valid signature threshold required to qualify a referendum to the ballot.

"This is a proud day for Oregon," Basic Rights Oregon executive director John Hummel said in response to the news. "It's unfortunate that this small group doesn't get the message: most Oregonians know that discrimination is wrong"

“I was frustrated by what was happening in the government and I wanted my voice to be heard. The postcards were inspired by the posters I saw at protest rallies. I thought, wouldn’t it be great if I could send one to my congressperson. Then I thought, why stop there? So I decided to create and send a postcard to every Democrat in Congress, 231 in all.”
