Fiery Crash on Sauvie Island Affects Natural Gas Customers

The driver escaped from the vehicle before it caught fire, but he was injured in the crash.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Witnesses called 911 last night around 6:10 PM to report that a pick-up truck had crashed in the 14400 block of NW Gillahan Rd on Sauvie Island. The callers told police that the pick-up had crashed into a power pole knocking it over, bringing down power lines. The vehicle came to rest on a series of high pressure natural gas pipelines that service Sauvie Island.

Lt. Jason Gates with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office says at least one of the high pressure lines was breached, leaking natural gas into the air. The pick-up caught fire and according to witnesses "exploded" into flames.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Topps Meat Company LLC., located in Elizabeth, NJ, has voluntarily expanded its recall announced on September 25th to include 21.7 million pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

This represents all products produced by Topps with a “sell by date” or “best if used by date” that falls between September 25th, 2007 and September 25th, 2008. All recalled products will have a USDA establishment number of EST 9748, which is located on the back panel of the package and/or in the USDA legend.

Nine Arrested in Eugene Meth Bust

A total of nine individuals were arrested, four of which were lodged in Lane County Jail.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - Four people were lodged and five others cited on drug-related charges Friday morning after a search warrant was served at a Eugene-area property.

During the property search detectives located an unspecified amount of methamphetamine and marijuana, along with firearms and evidence consistent with the illegal distribution of methamphetamine.

Duck Tangled in Fishing Line Rescued in Lake Oswego

(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in conjunction with Portland Audubon Society rescued a mallard duck Sept. 27 at George Rogers Park in Lake Oswego that had been entangled in fishing line.

Marist High Student Struck on Way to School

The initial investigation indicates that the driver, who had the sun in her eyes, proceeded into the crosswalk despite being unable to see clearly in front of her vehicle, and struck the victim.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - A Marist High School student was rushed to a local hospital Thursday morning after being struck by an SUV on her way to school.

About 7:45 AM, 14-year-old Jaclyn Elsita Merlo of Junction City was on her way to school at Marist, crossing Goodpasture Island Road at Kingsley Road in a marked and signaled crosswalk after getting off the bus.

Judge Grants Country Star Sara Evans Divorce

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) - A Judge on Friday granted country singer Sara Evans a divorce Friday from her ex-husband Craig Schelske, from Salem, Ore. on the grounds of irreconcilable differences.

According to court records, the two agreed on a joint custody plan for their three children and will split marital assets. Evans also agreed to pay Schelske alimony of $600,000 over 10 years.

The United Nations reports 63 percent of Iraqis said they left their neighborhoods because of direct threats to their lives. These threats are often based on religion or association with American forces.

California High School Hostage Situation Ends Peacefully

A sheriff's department spokesman said the male student fired one shot into the air.

(OROVILLE, Calif. ) - A student has been taken into custody today at a California high school after holding students and staff hostage in a band room at gunpoint for more than an hour, authorities said.

The Butte County Sheriff's Department says no one was injured at Las Plumas High School in Oroville, California, just north of Sacramento, in the standoff, which began about 9:00 AM PT, and ended just before 11:00 AM PT.
