Salem-Keizer Test Scores Reflect Academic Growth

Officials say differences this year include a change by the state in the achievement standards, a new alternate assessment, fewer re-test opportunities and a temporary switch to paper and pencil tests.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The 2006-07 test scores released today by the Oregon Department of Education indicate a number of local student improvements. Overall, Salem-Keizer schools saw improvement in reading, writing, and math at the middle and high school level.

However, one area the school district say warrants specific attention involved elementary math scores at the third and fourth grade level. Those numbers dropped, but it is reported that the decline mirrors a statewide trend.

FBI: Violent Crimes in U.S. Rise in 2006

The FBI estimated that law enforcement agencies nationwide made 14,380,370 arrests in 2006, excluding those for traffic offenses.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - For the second consecutive year, the estimated number of violent crimes in the nation increased, and for the fourth year in a row, the estimated number of property crimes decreased.

According to statistics released today by the FBI, the estimated volume of violent crime increased 1.9 percent, and the estimated volume of property crime decreased 1.9 percent in 2006 when compared with 2005 figures.

Of the violent crimes, the estimated number of murders and nonnegligent manslaughters increased 1.8 percent.

Woman Dies in Crash Near Klamath Falls

Police say they do not know what caused the crash, the investigation is continuing.

(KLAMATH FALLS, Ore.) - A Klamath Falls-area woman died early Monday morning when the car she was driving crossed the centerline and collided with a commercial truck on Highway 97 about three miles north of Klamath Falls.

Police say that at approximately 12:50 AM, a 2005 Honda Civic driven by 56-year old Susan Therese Stewart of Klamath Falls, was southbound on Highway 97 near milepost 269 when, for an unknown reason, it crossed the centerline into the northbound lane and collided with a northbound 2004 Freightliner commercial truck.

Two Die in Lane County Crash

Police say the don't know why a pickup truck crossed the center line.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - A Springfield woman and a Pleasant Hill woman were killed and Pleasant Hill man injured in a two car head-on collision this afternoon near Springfield.

United Auto Workers Strikes on GM Corporation

This is the first time in decades that a strike of this level has occurred.

(DETROIT) - The UAW announced today that due to the failure of General Motors to address job security and other mandatory issues of bargaining, the union set a firm strike deadline, and it began at 11:00 AM today.

“We’re shocked and disappointed that General Motors has failed to recognize and appreciate what our membership has contributed during the past four years,” said UAW President Ron Gettelfinger.

Holman Wayside`s Future Topic of Public Meeting

People who use the wayside for bicycling or jogging are encouraged to attend the meeting.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department will hold a public meeting Tuesday night, to discuss future management of Holman Wayside.

The wayside is on Highway 22 four miles west of Salem, and provides a small parking lot, restroom and drinking water. A bicycle and jogging path passes through the area from West Salem and heads west toward Monmouth.

The wayside was temporarily closed to vehicles earlier this summer due to persistent problems with crime and public indecency.

Polk County Announces 2007 Flu Shot Clinics

Clinics will be held in West Salem, Dallas, Monmouth, and Grand Ronde.

(DALLAS, Ore. ) - The Polk County Health Department has announced it's 2007 flu shot clinics.

Two Dead, One Injured in Lane County Crash

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash police said.

(SPRINGFIELD, Ore. ) - A Springfield woman and a Pleasant Hill woman were killed and Pleasant Hill man injured in a two car head-on collision Sunday afternoon near Springfield.

The investigation showed a 2003 Chevrolet pick-up operated by Natalie Ann Peterson, 19, of Springfield, was traveling eastbound on Jasper Rd near Mile Post 3.

For an unknown reason, her vehicle left the roadway and drifted onto the right shoulder.

Earthquake Shakes North of Salem Last Night

There are no reports of injures or damage from the quake.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - A minor earthquake shook the mid-Willamette Valley last night.

The USGS says the 3.6 magnitude quake struck at 11:20 PM, and was centered 5 miles NW of Brooks, 12 miles north of Salem, and had a depth of 13.8 miles.

Reports into the Salem-News.com Newsroom from local residents said the quake lasted only a couple of seconds, but the quake was strong enough to shake computer tables, lamps, and nerves.

Vietnam War: It Could Have Been Avoided

If we learned from our mistakes, the world would be a different place today.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Long before the U.S. went to Vietnam, before at least 58,148 of our countrymen were killed there, our country was asked by an acting leader of that nation to help them finally achieve control over their own country.

The year was 1945, the man asking was Ho Chi Minh, and he would later become the leader of the communist forces of the North Vietnamese. When you look at the history of the Vietnam conflict, you learn that it could have easily been avoided.
