Oregon Scientists to Study Harmful Algal Blooms

Phytoplankton blooms are a normal ocean process, critical to maintaining the productive marine food web off the Pacific Northwest coast.

(NEWPORT, Ore. ) - A team of Oregon scientists has received a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to begin monitoring harmful algal blooms off the coast, and responding to these events as they occur.

The group will work closely with NOAA scientists at OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, as well as in Seattle and Monterey, Calif., and with the Oregon Department of Agriculture, which tests for toxin levels in coastal shellfish and makes decisions on closures.

Small Business Owners Say Healthcare System Needs to Change

The information comes from a recently conducted Wells Fargo/Gallup survey‏.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The state of the current U.S. healthcare system remains a primary concern for small business owners, according to the latest Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index. Almost nine out of 10 small business owners surveyed said the current healthcare system is in need of change, with six out of 10 saying a complete overhaul is in order.

Hurricane Humberto Hits Texas Coast, Louisiana

The storm is expected to leave thousands without power for at least a week.

(GALVESTON, TX) - Hurricane Humberto strengthened rapidly into a hurricane before making landfall this morning just east of Galveston, Texas.

In Texas, Gov. Rick Perry has activated 50 military vehicles with 200 soldiers, plus six helicopters and two swift-water rescue teams.

In Louisiana, Gov. Kathleen Blanco has declared a state of emergency.

Horizon Canceling 127 Q400 Flights Today for Landing Gear Inspections

Horizon canceled 120 flights yesterday out of its daily average of 500.

(SEATTLE) - In response to a Transport Canada airworthiness directive (AD), Horizon Air initiated the inspection of the landing gear of its Bombardier Aerospace Q400 turboprops.

The AD was produced in the wake of two landing gear failure incidents involving SAS-affiliated airlines in Europe.

To allow sufficient time for the inspection process and the reaccommodation of customers whose travels are being affected, Horizon announced it will be making additional flight cancellations through Friday.

Wilderness Survivor Transferred to Providence Portland Medical Center‏

Her condition is currently being evaluated.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The 76-year-old woman who survived two weeks in the wilderness has now been transferred to Providence Portland Medical Center for rehabilitation therapy. An Angel Flight volunteer pilot flew Doris Anderson to Portland from Baker City, Ore. where she was initially treated at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

The Sandy, Oregon resident became lost while on a hunting trip with her husband in the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area in Eastern Oregon. She was found 13 days later on Sept. 6th.

Health Advisory Issued for Water Contact at Nye Beach

Although state officials discourage water contact, they continue to encourage other recreational activities on these beaches.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - A public health advisory was issued Wednesday due to higher-than-normal levels of bacteria in ocean waters at Nye Beach in Lincoln County. Increased pathogen and fecal bacteria levels in ocean waters can come from both shore and inland sources such as storm water runoff, sewer overflows, failing septic systems and even animal waste from livestock, pets and wildlife.

16 Year Old Aloha Boy Stabbed in Probable Gang Fight

The victim is expected to survive the attack.

(ALOHA, Ore.) - Investigators in Aloha say a 16-year old suffered multiple stab wounds Tuesday in an Aloha apartment complex parking lot. Investigators who responded to the scene learned that a rival gang member likely stabbed the victim.

The victim was transported to the hospital with multiple stab wounds to the torso and blunt force injuries to the head. Three people have been detained for questioning and more suspects are still at large.

Regis High School in Stayton Spray Painted by Vandals

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has suspect information is asked to call Stayton Police at (503) 769-3421.

(STAYTON, Ore.) - Stayton Police say an unknown group of individuals vandalized Regis High School this morning, spray painting the outside walls of the school, parking lot, track, football field, bleachers and lawn.

It happened around 7:30 AM, after police received a report of first degree criminal mischief at Regis. "Obscene pictures and words were painted causing an estimated $5000 in damage." Stayton Police Department Lieutenant Rich Sebens said.

Environmental Scorecard Shows Some Legislators are moving in the Right Direction

OLCV says the legislators' good decisions are helping to protect Oregon’s air, water and farmland.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The 2007 Oregon Legislature received its highest scores since 1977 for an outstanding environmental voting performance, in part due to an improvement from Legislators representing Marion County, according to the 2007 Environmental Legislative Scorecard released by the Oregon League of Conservation Voters.

Several Marion County Representatives made great strides in doing what’s right to keep Oregon’s air and water healthy and protect local farms and forests.

(SALEM, Ore.) - If you know a great educator who deserves recognition, you can nominate them for the for the 2007 Crystal Apple Awards. It its 11th year, the annual event recognizing excellence in education. It is set for November 15th at Salem’s historic Elsinore Theater.

All community members, students and parents are welcome to nominate any full or part-time employee of Salem-Keizer Public Schools or Salem or Keizer private schools. Nominations are accepted for three categories: teacher, administrator and support staff.
