Pelican in Oregon Tests Positive for West Nile Virus

The Oregon Department of Human Services reported 73 human cases of West Nile virus in Oregon last year.

(SUMMER LAKE, Ore. ) - West Nile Virus has been detected in a pelican taken from Summer Lake Wildlife Area, marking the first 2007 detection of the disease in Lake County.

The American White Pelican was found dead at Summer Lake on Aug. 20th.

This is the first-ever detection of the disease at Summer Lake Wildlife Area.

Governor Signs Post-Secondary Education Executive Orders

Orders create a Postsecondary Quality Education Commission and direct the state to calculate the Essential Budget Level for community colleges.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski has signed two executive orders, one creating a Postsecondary Quality Education Commission, which is charged with developing a new model for assessing the funding needs of community colleges and universities.

The second executive order directs the state to update the methodology for developing funding needs for community colleges.

Penalty to Increase for Cheating on Oregon Driver`s License Tests

Applicants who are caught cheating are entitled to appeal the 90-day waiting period if it creates a hardship due to employment or medical reasons, for example.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The penalty for cheating on the DMV knowledge test will get tougher starting Sept. 4th.

Under a pilot policy, applicants who DMV determines are cheating will not be eligible to retake any knowledge test for 90 days.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - The 111th season of Oregon State football begins Thursday when the Beavers host the Utah Utes of the Mountain West Conference. Kickoff is set for 7:02 p.m. PDT.

ARMED & DANGEROUS: Reward Offered for Bandana Bandit Bank Robber

The reward is offered by the Oregon Financial Institution Security Task Force.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person responsible for a series of armed bank robberies in Eugene, Oregon between March and August 2007.

Investigators believe the “Bandana Bandit”, so named for covering his face with a bandana, is responsible for at least three bank robberies from March 2nd to August 20th. Upon entering the bank, the “Bandana Bandit” displays a handgun and verbally demands money from victimized bank tellers.

Oregon State Police Investigation Vandalism of Roadside Memorial

(HALFWAY, Ore.) - Oregon State Police are trying to figure out who is responsible for vandalizing a highway safety sign near Halfway that was installed in memory of two people killed in an alcohol-related traffic crash nearly two years ago.

OSP Spokesman Greg Hastings says that on August 22nd, an ODOT employee discovered that the highway safety sign was torn down and vandalized from its installed location along Oregon Highway 86, the Baker-Copperfield Highway, near milepost 58 in Baker County.

Canby Man Jailed on Strangulation and Assault Charges

Police say two other witnesses were uncooperative in their investigation.

(CANBY, Ore.) - A Canby man is in custody on a number of charges that left a woman beaten and cut, and two other people with apparent knife injuries.

Police say Kenneth V. Fisher, who also uses the name Kenneth V. Shultes, was at located at 181 NE 5th ave in Canby and arrested for Strangulation, Assault II, and Assault IV charges.

Dallas Woman Arrested for Using Stolen Credit Card at Oregon State Fair

The unlawfully purchased merchandise was recovered and returned to their respective State Fair vendors.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon State Police arrested a Dallas-area woman Tuesday after an investigation revealed she allegedly used her ex-employer's stolen business credit card to pay for State Fair expenses and vendor merchandise including beef jerky, teddy bears and furnishings.

OSP troopers working at the Oregon State Fair were contacted by a Dallas electrical company advising someone was using a stolen company credit card to charge in excess of $800 over the weekend to pay for admission, ride tickets and vendor merchandise including jewelry, custom lamps, teddy bears and $85 worth of beef jerky.
