Motorcyclist Arrested After Oregon Police Pursuit

Police say the rider admitted his speed was near 150 mph during the incident, said he likes to drive fast and did not want to get another speeding ticket.

(ROSEBURG, Ore.) - A Seattle, Washington man was arrested on several charges Tuesday morning in the Roseburg area after multiple attempts to elude Oregon State Police troopers on Interstate 5 southbound from the Eugene area.

OSP Spokesman Lt. Greg Hastings says an OSP trooper tackled the man off his motorcycle before he could flee again after he had mistakenly taken a dead-end gravel road in southeast Roseburg.

Health Advisory Issued for Water Contact at Siletz Bay Beach

The Siletz Bay is located at the south end of Lincoln City.

(LINCOLN CITY, Ore.) - A public health advisory was issued due to higher-than-normal levels of bacteria in ocean waters at Siletz Bay Beach in Lincoln County.

Increased pathogen and fecal bacteria levels in ocean waters can come from both shore and inland sources such as storm water runoff, sewer overflows, failing septic systems and even animal waste from livestock, pets and wildlife.

FDA Warns of Botulism Risk from Canned French Cut Green Beans

Product marketed under a variety of brand names.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to eat certain brands of French Cut Green Beans in 14.5 ounce cans manufactured by Lakeside Foods Inc, of Manitowoc, Wisconsin because the product may not have been processed adequately to eliminate the potential for botulism toxin.

The canned green beans may cause botulism if consumed. FDA is providing this warning to make consumers aware of the possible risk of serious illness from eating these products. As of August 1, 2007, FDA had not received reports of illnesses related to the product.

Gasoline Prices Continue to Fall, But How Much Longer?

Prices still moving downward...a bit slowly, but downward. Crude oil still above $70, so expect that cost to show up at the pumps eventually.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Gasoline prices continue their downward trend, with the national average for a gallon of regular at $2.83, four and one-half cents lower than a week ago. In Oregon, the decline was less than four cents per gallon to $2.86. Only seven states, including California, Montana, and North Dakota, still have average prices above $3 per gallon.

Portland is Oregon’s price leader with a gallon of regular going for $2.79. Salem’s current cost for regular is $2.81. Drivers in the Medford/Ashland area are paying $2.82, Eugene/Springfield’s average is $2.84. Vancouver area residents are paying $2.89.

(LOS ANGELES, Ca.) - The longest-running anchor in television history, Hal Fishman, passed away in Los Angeles after 47 years on the air as an evening news anchor. He has been a presence in Los Angeles broadcasting for nearly five decades.

KTLA writes, "That many in the city grew up knowing and trusting, has died at the age of 75. Hal's strong connection with Southern Californians, along with his journalistic integrity, made him one of the brightest stars in KTLA's 60-year history."

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced Monday that group remains of five U.S. servicemen, missing in action from the Vietnam War, will be returned to their families soon for burial with full military honors.

They are Chief Warrant Officer Dennis C. Hamilton, of Barnes City, Iowa; Chief Warrant Officer Sheldon D. Schultz, of Altoona, Pa.; Sgt. 1st Class Ernest F. Briggs Jr., of San Antonio, Texas; Sgt. 1st Class John T. Gallagher, of Hamden, Conn.; and Sgt. 1st Class James D. Williamson, of Olympia, Wash.; all U.S. Army.

News Darkens for Trapped Miners in Utah

(HUNTINGTON, Utah) - Heavy machinery has been brought in to the site of a collapsed coal mine in Utah where six miners are trapped.

Rescuers are hoping that the equipment can help them reach the trapped men 1,500 feet below the surface of the earth.

A representative of the Murray Energy Corp. of Cleveland says they do know where the men are. It was not clear though if they have adequate breathing equipment, lights and emergency food supplies.

Governor Awaits Oregon Bridge Safety Report

Governor expects report on status of bridge inspection by end of next week.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski has directed the Oregon Department of Transportation to expedite inspections of all of Oregon’s steel deck truss bridges, which is the kind of bridge that collapsed in Minneapolis on Wednesday, August 1st.

At the Governor’s direction, ODOT has begun inspecting components of Oregon’s 28 steel deck truss bridges, including the main load carrying members and any elements prone to fatigue cracking.

NASA: Space Shuttle Endeavour Cleared for Launch

Space Shuttle Endeavour is scheduled for a 6:36 PM EST launch on Wednesday from Pad 39A.

(CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.) - Space Shuttle Endeavour is in good shape and on target for launch Wednesday, according to members of NASA's Mission Management Team. Members of the team, known as the MMT, who met Monday to review the launch status, and confirmed that the countdown is proceeding right on schedule.

Weather is not expected to stand in the way of a Wednesday evening liftoff.

Late Monday night, workers will load propellants into the onboard reactant tanks for the shuttle's three fuel cells.
