Tigard Parade Saturday Welcomes Oregon Soldiers Home From Afghanistan

The soldiers spent 16 months away from their families, and Salem-News.com spent two months 'in country' with these soldiers last winter.

(TIGARD, Ore.) - Oregon residents can welcome their own state's troops home Saturday with a series of events planned in Tigard. Oregon's Governor Ted Kulongoski will be on hand as well as most of soldiers that number over 900.

The 41st Combat Brigade Team of the Oregon National Guard is returning from a 16 month deployment to Afghanistan.

Original Oregon Cartoon Series Nota Bene Celebrates One Year

When Glen Bledsoe (A.K.A. Leonardo) first approached us with the idea of running the original series on Salem-News.com, we were thrilled. The elements that allow Nota Bene to be so relevant and creative at the same time, include his artistic touch, background as a professional educator an intense knowledge and study of history.

Pair Arrested for Allegedly Raping Teen Girl

Both men are being held in the Polk County Jail.

(INDEPENDENCE, Ore. ) - Two men have been arrested for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl.

Independence police say they received a call on what was believed to be a fight at 2:14 AM on Monday in the 800 block of N. Main St.

When officers arrived the found the victim, who told them that she had been forcibly raped.

Marion County Sheriff Raul Ramirez Announces Retirement

Ramirez was named Sheriff of the Year in 2006.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Marion County Sheriff Raul Ramirez announced today that he plans to retire next month.

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement as Marion County Sheriff effective September 1st", Ramirez said.

He began his career with Marion County as a Juvenile Parole and Probation officer and in 1975 joined the ranks of the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Corps: Willamette Valley Reservoirs in Good Shape

The Corps relies primarily on rainfall during the months of April, May and early June to fill its system of 13 dams and reservoirs in the Willamette River basin.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - To maintain the balance between recreation demands and requirements to protect fish during this low water year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will not make mid-season changes to its Willamette Valley operations as it would in a typical water year, the Corps announced today.

Detroit Reservoir east of Salem remains about 90 percent full and the Corps currently estimates all boat ramps will be available during the Labor Day weekend.

Boating opportunities also look good for Foster, Dexter and Fern Ridge reservoirs for the Labor Day weekend.

Police in Stayton Investigating String of Residential Burglaries

Even though the temperatures are warm, police would like to urge people to be sure their home and valuables are secured.

(STAYTON, Ore. ) - On July 31st, the Stayton Police Department investigated a residential burglary in the 1100 block of N. Gardner Ave.

The suspect entered the home while the residents were sleeping. They entered through an open screen door left open because of the temperature.

Several hundred dollars in property were taken including personal identification.

Search Resumes Today for Missing Teen Swimmer

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Just after 7:00 PM on Tuesday, the Polk County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol unit responded to the Wallace Marine Park area for a report of a missing 16-year-old male.

The Sheriff's Office immediately responded to the area within just a couple of minutes of the report and located a male on the east bank – just down from the Salem Railroad Bridge.

Woman Pinned Under Boulder on Mount Hood Removed by Rescuers

An Oregon Guard helicopter may be used to lift the hiker off Mount Hood.

(MOUNT HOOD, Ore.) - Search and Rescue workers on Mount Hood say an injured female hiker has been reached. They were able to free her from under a boulder described as weighing approximately a ton, that had pinned her leg.

Clackamas Sheriff Spokesman Jim Strovink says the woman's leg is described as broken, adding that she is conscious and breathing.

Search & Rescue Teams Seeking Injured Hiker on Mount Hood

The injured hiker is reportedly off the trail, three quarters of a mile up the river basin.

(MOUNT HOOD, Ore.) - Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Search & Rescue teams are responding to the Government Cama area of Mount Hood in search of a 18 to 19 year-old woman who is reportedly pinned under a large rock.

The boulder is described to weigh at least one ton, with the patient in shock, Sheriff's Office Spokesman Jim Strovink said.
