Downtown Salem Accident Kills Pedestrian

Police say the driver turned too wide for the turn lane and ran into victim.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Salem Police Department investigated a fatal accident involving a pedestrian and a vehicle at 9:23 AM this morning.

The investigation revealed that victim, 77-year-old George Lester Bertoglio, was crossing westbound in the crosswalk on Center St NE crossing Liberty St NE when the accident occurred.

He was legally in the crosswalk and was in compliance with the crossing signal.

Hikers Found After Being Stranded Near Multnomah Falls

The pair attempted to find an alternate route down with out success leaving them trapped for the night.

(MULTNOMAH FALLS, Ore.) - 24-year-old Mike Leveton, of Vancouver, WA and 23-year-old Aurora Paulson also of Vancouver, WA set out at about noon on Sunday planning to hike up Moffett Creek to view Wahe Falls and another water fall farther up the creek.

Although Moffett Creek has no maintained trail it is still popular with experienced Gorge hikers and Leveton/Paulson found out about it from friend and coworker who had hiked the area before.

Once on top they realized they would not be able to descend safely.

War Deployments Responsible for Increased Child Abuse, Neglect

The study was funded by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Confirmed incidents of child abuse and neglect among Army families significantly increase when a parent is deployed to a combat zone, according to a new study by researchers at RTI International and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health.

The study, which appears in the Aug. 1 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, compares the rates of child abuse and neglect among nearly 2,000 Army families with confirmed incidents of child abuse or neglect.

Gas Prices in Oregon Continue to Fall

In Salem, the average price fell 5-cents a gallon this past week to $2.85.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - Improved output at Midwest refineries during the past week, caused the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline to plummet another eight cents to $2.88.

In Oregon, the decline was a bit more moderate at about four cents a gallon to $2.89, matching the average price at the end of March.

In the Portland metropolitan area, some retailers already are selling below $2.70.

Retired Salem Police Narcotics Canine Mick Passes

Mick joined the department in 1995.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Salem Police Department lost a loyal and valuable member of the team on Friday.

Mick, a 14-year-old Chocolate Labrador Retriever that worked narcotics detection for five years, first with handler George Finch, then on the streets with Officer Kris Knox.

Roberts Checks Out of Hospital, Says He`s OK

Roberts had a similar seizure in 1993.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has assured President George Bush that he was doing well, and a Supreme Court spokeswoman said he is leaving the hospital a day after suffering a seizure at his summer home in Maine.

Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said the 52-year-old Roberts was being released on Tuesday from the hospital in Maine, where he was rushed by ambulance after the Monday afternoon seizure that caused him to fall on a dock.

NFL Mourns `The Genius` Bill Walsh

Walsh went 102-63-1 with the 49ers, winning 10 of his 14 postseason games along with six division titles.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - Bill Walsh, who guided the San Francisco 49ers to three Super Bowl titles and enjoyed one of the most brilliant careers in the history of football, has died after a long fight with leukemia.

He was 75.

"This is just a tremendous loss for all of us, especially to the Bay Area because of what he meant to the 49ers," said Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana.

Scientists Detect Dead Zone Off Oregon Coast for Sixth Straight Year

The OSU researchers say the region has not yet fully recovered from last year’s historic hypoxia.

(NEWPORT, Ore. ) - A team of Oregon State University scientists monitoring near-shore ocean conditions off Oregon says that oxygen levels in the lower water column have plummeted, thrusting the region into a hypoxic event for the sixth consecutive year.

Hypoxia can lead to significant marine die-offs, the researchers say, depending on the severity, duration and location of the low-oxygen zone.

Texas Teen Found Strangled in Oregon Apartment

Police are still searching for suspects.

(MILWAUKIE, Ore. ) - The Oregon State Medical Examiners Office, Doctor Larry Lewman, has determined the cause of death concerning the young female homicide victim identified as 15-year-old Dani Jen'e Countryman to be the result of ‘strangulation'.

Dani Countryman of Kaufmann, Texas was discovered by her sister, Ashley Countryman, dead in an apartment Saturday morning at the Balboa Apartment complex, on SE Courtney Road, in the Oak Grove area of Milwaukie.
