Death Toll Rises to Five in Minneapolis Bridge Collapse

Eight people are still missing, and some of the dead have been identified.

(MINNEAPOLIS) - Divers have suspended their search for victims hidden in the murky waters of the Mississippi River, in what authorities say will be a slow and dangerous recovery operation after the Interstate 35W bridge buckled and collapsed, sending cars and trucks into the waters 64-feet below during the evening rush hour in Minneapolis on Wednesday.

Governor Tim Pawlenty said the 40-year-old steel arch bridge was last inspected in 2006 and no structural problems were found.

Searchers Will Try Again Today to Find Body of Missing Teen Swimmer

Friends of the family have set up a "Celebration Fund" in the name of Zacharey Harle.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Polk County Sheriff's Office resumed searching the Willamette River for 16-year-old Zacharey Harle without any success in locating the missing young man.

Thursday's search included specialized trained dogs from the Marion County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Team and the Newberg Fire Department Water Rescue Dive Team.

An estimated 50 vehicles fell into the river or were crushed as parts of the eight lane Interstate 35W bridge, a major Minneapolis artery, that was undergoing repairs and had several lanes closed when it crumbled during the evening rush hour in Minneapolis on Wednesday.

Governor Orders Flags Flown at Half-Staff in Memory of Oregon Soldier

A memorial service for Spc. Daniel Leckel will be held Saturday, at 10:00 AM at Glendale High School.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski has ordered all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff throughout Oregon on Saturday, August 4th, in honor of Army Specialist Daniel A. Leckel.

Leckel, 19, of Medford, died July 25 in Baghdad, Iraq.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Governor Kulongoski Signs ConnectOregon II

House Bill 2278 invests $100 million in Oregon’s air, rail, marine and public transportation systems.

(MEDFORD, Ore. ) - Today at the Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport, Governor Ted Kulongoski signed House Bill 2278, ConnectOregon II, which provides $100 million in grants and loans for key multimodal projects around the state.

Potentially Dangerous Tires Shipped to Dealers in Oregon

As many as 270,000 tires may have been considered substandard or missing “gum strips,” an important part of a tire related to the prevention of tread separation.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Attorney General Hardy Myers today warned consumers about potentially dangerous tires manufactured between 2002 to 2006 for light trucks, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), and vans.

FTS distributed over 11,000 of the tires to dealers in Oregon.

Mattel Recalls Preschool Toys on Lead Paint Fears

The recall includes: Sesame Street dolls, Elmo's Guitar, Dora's Talking House and 81 other products.

(NEW YORK) - Mattel, Inc. has announced that the company has voluntarily recalled some products made by a contract manufacturer in China that were produced using a non-approved paint pigment containing lead, which is in violation of applicable standards, as well as our own self-imposed standards.

Mattel is working with retailers worldwide to identify affected products, have them removed from retail shelves and intercept incoming shipments and stop them from being sold.

Welding Starts Shed on Fire

The Salem Fire Department would like to remind citizens to be careful with open flames during this hot, dry summer.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Salem Fire Department responded to a call for a shed fire at 5386 Aster St. NW at 4:41 PM on Wednesday.

First arriving firefighters reported that smoke was coming from the shed and flames were seen in the nearby trees as they arrived.

Eight-Year-Old Boy on Pocket Bike Struck by Truck

The boy was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

(CORNELIUS, Ore.) - On Wednesday, at 11:17 AM, deputies with the Washington County Sheriff's Office responded to an injury crash on N.W. Kerkman Road near N.W. Zion Church Road.

The crash involved eight-year-old Ali Alfaro of Cornelius who was riding a pocket bike.

The investigation showed that Alfaro was riding the bike on private property when for some reason he drove out the driveway and onto N.W. Kerkman Road.
