Iraqi Militia Leader Captured; Car Bombs Kill 14 in Baghdad

Two car bombs killed a total of 14 Iraqis yesterday, and coalition forces killed three terrorists and detained two others.

(BAGHDAD, Iraq) - Officials in Iraq today identified a detainee alleged to be a key leader of a rogue militia element who has been in coalition custody since June 28, and a pair of car bombs killed 14 Iraqis in Baghdad yesterday.

Sheikh (Ahmed) Mohammad Hassan Sbahi al-Khafaji, believed to be an important figure in radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Jaysh al-Mahdi militia, was captured during an operation in Nasiriyah, officials said.

Newport, Oregon Authorities Bust Counterfeiting Operation

Officers found several counterfeit US Currencies in denominations of 100, 50, 20, and 10 inside the suspects U-Haul.

(NEWPORT, Ore. ) - Newport police have busted a counterfeiting operation, and they are looking for more victims.

Newport Officers were dispatched to the Newport Liquor Store Saturday on a report of a subject who attempted to pass a counterfeit bill. A liquor store employee followed the suspect and kept the dispatch center updated on his location until police arrived.

Salem Woman Arrested Again for Car Theft

(SALEM, Ore. ) - A Salem woman, who had just been released from the Marion County Jail, is back behind bars after stealing a car.

Tragedy Strikes Congonhas Airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Sadly, it is the country's second major air disaster in less than a year.

(SAO PAULO) - Tragedy rained from the sky in Brazil Tuesday when an airliner crashed and exploded in flames at the country's most busy airport.

It was feared that as many as 200 passengers died in the disaster. They include Brazilian state Governor, Jose Serra of Sao Paulo was among the 176 people aboard the plane, an Airbus A320.

Former Pittsburgh Pirate Kenneth Kelly Passes Away in Salem

Kenneth Kelly lived from January 23rd, 1934 to July 7th, 2007. Ken's wife is our Community Editor, Lela Taylor-Kelly.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Kenneth Kelly was born in Lafayette, Indiana, on January 2rd, 1934, to mother Carmen Curts.

During his life, Ken experienced many things. Upon graduating from Lafayette Jefferson High, where he played short stop on their baseball team, he was signed by the national baseball team, the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Motorcycle Rider Arrested Over July 14th Crash Near Sweet Home

Witnesses say the bike made an illegal pass before the rider cranked a "wheelie" and lost control.

(ALBANY, Ore.) - The rider of a motorcycle who lost control and crashed Saturday night one mile west of Sweet Home on Highway 228 was taken into custody by Oregon State Police upon release from a Lebanon-area hospital Tuesday.

The female passenger remains in serious condition at a Eugene-area hospital.

Oregon Soldier`s Family Warning of Burial Scam

(DALLAS, Ore. ) - The family of Cpl. Kory Wiens has discovered more than one local business in Dallas, Ore. was contacted yesterday by someone asking for monetary donations on their behalf.

An individual unknown to the Wiens family has made telephone calls asking for assistance with burial costs for Kory's search dog, Cooper.

Report: Chris Benoit Had Steroids, Xanax, Hydrocodone in System

Benoit killed his wife, Nancy, on June 22nd and son, Daniel, 7, the next day before killing himself later that night in their Fayetteville home.

(DECATUR, Ga.) - Georgia's top medical examiner said Tuesday that fromer pro wrestler Chris Benoit had an elevated level of steroids in his system when he killed his wife and seven-year-old son before taking his own life.

Dr. Kris Sperry says tests found ten times the normal level of testosterone, indicating that Benoit likely injected the substance shortly before he died.

Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard said everything still leads investigators to believe it was a murder-suicide.

Wyden, Smith Announce Federal Funding for Oregon Transportation Projects

Included is $1.5 million for the Salem Airport to extend the runway at McNary Field.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Gordon Smith (R-OR) announced today that nearly $93 million is included in the FY2008 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill for transportation and community development projects throughout the state of Oregon.

“Every dollar spent on expanding public transportation, upgrading roads and developing communities is a dollar invested in Oregon’s future and quality of life,” Wyden said.
