Overnight 2-Alarm Fire Damages SE Portland Apartment

Investigators know the fire started in the back bedroom but still have a lot of work to do before they discover what specifically started the fire.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - fire investigation image Fire crews in SE Portland were kept busy Thursday night by a fire that broke out in an apartment building located at 4420 SE Belmont.

When battalion Chief Todd Keathley arrived he reported "fire showing" from the apartment building.

Portland Police Officers were on scene, before the arrival of the fire crews, working to get all the residents out of the building.

Another concern to area fire officials is children misusing fire.

What many area residents seem to forget is that when fire conditions are high in the Oregon woods, they are high in area neighborhoods as well.

That is why officials of the Salem Fire Department, and the Keizer Fire District would like to remind residents to be extremely careful with fire and the things that start fires, especially at this dry time of the year.

The legislation is supported by environmental groups, concerned about toxic air emissions, and the agriculture community, where it is seen as an excellent source for rural economic development.

Bad Weather Pushes Space Shuttle Landing to Friday

Controllers and the Spaceflight Meteorology Group will closely monitor forecasts for Friday’s opportunities in Florida and at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

Space shuttle Atlantis has five landing opportunities available Friday, with the first at 2:18 PM EDT in Florida.

Thunderstorms in the vicinity of Kennedy forced flight controllers to wave off both opportunities Thursday.

Atlantis Closes Payload Doors; Mission Control Eyes Weather

A second landing opportunity is available today if flight controllers choose to pass on the first.

(HOUSTON) - shuttle landing site photo The Atlantis crew closed space shuttle Atlantis’ payload bay doors this morning in preparation for a landing at Kennedy Space Center, Fla. landing, which is slated for 1:55 PM EDT, will mark the end of a successful mission to the International Space Station.

If flight controllers give STS-117 the go-ahead to land on Orbit 202, Commander Rick Sturckow and Pilot Lee Archambault will fire Atlantis’ thrusters at 12:50 PM to begin the descent to Florida.

14 U.S. Soldiers Killed in Iraq

Two Marines assigned to Multinational Force West were killed yesterday while conducting combat operations in Iraq's Anbar province.

Five Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers, three Iraqi civilians and an Iraqi interpreter were killed today when a roadside bomb detonated near a coalition vehicle during combat operations in a northeastern section of Baghdad June 21st.

Jefferson Firefighters Respond to Brush Fire Along I-5

The cause of the fire is unknown.

(JEFFERSON, Ore. ) - jefferson fire photo Jefferson firefighters responded to a brush fire on Ankeny Hill Rd. east of I-5 next to the Ankeny Hill - I-5 Interchange (Exit 243) at 3:07 PM Wednesday afternoon.

According to Asst. Chief Scott Shepherd, the fire was approximately 40 feet by 40 feet and burned thick brush and did spread into some nearby trees and was located on state property.
