Salem Public Works Day is Thursday at Riverfront Park

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The City of Salem's Public Works Department will celebrate its fourth annual Public Works Day at Riverfront Park Thursday, from 10:30 AM until 2:00 PM.

A variety of equipment that city crews use to operate and maintain the city's water, sewer, storm, and transportation systems will be on display.

Come for lunch and see Claudia, the 29-foot Chinook; watch a demonstration of how large water pipes are repaired; root for your favorite team in a backhoe bowling contest.

Oregon Cat Shot in Neck with Arrow, Survives

The 10 lb. male cat, nicknamed Jack Arrow by OHS staffers, has recovered from what could have been a fatal wound and is now available for adoption.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - They thought he would die. When the Parker family saw the black and white cat with an arrow through his neck, they thought his chances of surviving were slim.

Maeleah Parker, 16, screamed with fright when she spotted the injured cat in their front yard.

Salem Attorney, Two Others, Arrested in Cocaine Bust

Westly Warner was also charged with distribution of cocaine within 1000 feet of a school due to his house being that close to Four Corners Elemenatary School.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Early Wednesday morning, the Salem Police Street Crimes Unit and the Drug Activity Response Team arrested three people for possession and distribution of cocaine after a week long investigation.

About one week ago detectives were contacted by a citizen who reported buying cocaine from a local attorney, Westly Warner.

Marion County Fair Hosts Texas Hold-`Em Open Championship

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The 2007 Marion County Fair will host the first-ever Texas Hold-'Em Open Championship.

The top 50 players will win prizes, and the winner of the tournament will receive an engraved silver bracelet from Jackson Jewelers.

Registration is free and the competition will be limited to the first 800 players who sign up.

SeaFest Celebration Returns to Oregon Coast this Weekend

(NEWPORT, Ore. ) - After a one-year hiatus, the popular SeaFest celebration returns to the Oregon coast on Saturday at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport.

The event offers entertaining and educational activities for visitors of all ages, with exhibits, lectures and interactive displays that celebrate the ocean’s bounty and Oregon’s coastal heritage, while seeking to increase public understanding of the marine environment and human impacts.

All events are free and open to the public.

Connecticut Governor Vetoes Medical Marijuana Bill

Governor Rell: “While we all want to relieve pain and suffering, other effective treatments are available and this bill would require illegal activity”

(HARTFORD, Conn. ) - Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell has vetoed a bill approved by the General Assembly that would have allowed the medical use of marijuana.

“Smoked marijuana as medicine has been rejected by the American Medical Association, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the American Glaucoma Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmolgy and the American Cancer Society,” Governor Rell stated in her veto message.

President Bush Vetos Stem-Cell Bill Again

The Democratic-led Congress is expected to schedule a vote to try to override the veto.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - President George Bush has vetoed a bill that would have eased restrictions on federally-funded stem-cell research.

Bush used his veto power for the second time on the stem-cell issue, the White House issued a statement explaining that if the legislation had become law, "it would compel American taxpayers - for the first time in our history - to support the deliberate destruction of human embryos."

Bush also issued an executive order increasing federal support for stem-cell research using non-embryonic tissues.

Governor Signs Anti-Price Gouging and Consumer Protection Laws

SB 118 establishes the first anti-price gouging bill, SB 117 enforces the “Do Not Call List” and SB 122 stops promotional checks that cause payment when cashed.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Governor Ted Kulongoski was joined by Attorney General Hardy Myers to sign three pieces of legislation that complement the Governor’s consumer protection package, which will strengthen the tools of the executive branch and individual Oregonians to protect themselves and their families from unfair business practices.

“This legislation will provide greater protections for Oregonians against deceitful, unlawful and unfair business practices – while giving consumers the tools they need to protect themselves and their families,” said Governor Kulongoski.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Traffic circulation will be significantly limited in central, northeast, and east Salem during the late afternoon Thursday, as a result of the funeral procession for Marion County Sheriff Deputy Kelly Fredinburg, who was killed in a head-on crash on Highway 99E on Saturday, June 16th.

Governor Kulongoski has ordered all flags at public institutions to be flown at half-staff on Thursday in honor of Deputy Fredinburg.
