Oregon Guardsman Finds You Are Never to Old to Serve Your Country

Many of his fellow Oregon Soldiers had yet to be born when Gholston deployed to Vietnam in 1975.

(FORT DIX, N.J.) - Sgt. 1st Class Michael Gholston comes off the firing line and takes off his Kevlar helmet. Large droplets of sweat stream down his face. Gholston wipes the sweat from his brow and looks around at his fellow Oregon National Guard Soldiers.

At 52-years-of-age, Gholston stands out from his fellow Soldiers, all of which are in their 20s or 30s.

His hair is several shades greyer and his face is more lined, but as the other Soldiers take a short respite from the day's training by sitting in the shade of a tree, Gholston remains standing.

Mobile Home Park Closure Legislation Moves to Senate

The legislation passed by a vote of 36 to 23 on the House Floor.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - It was bittersweet day for supporters of the comprehensive Mobile Home Park Closure Relief Package drafted by a coalition of park tenants, landlords and others.

The only difference between the minority report and HB 2735-B was a provision to block cities from adopting more stringent park closure laws.

Fire Heavily Damages Keizer House

The cause of the fire was determined to be suspicious.

(KEIZER, Ore. ) - An early morning fire caused extensive damage to an abandoned house in Keizer on Tuesday Keizer Fire District officials said.

Keizer Firefighters were alerted to the fire at 5010 Windsor Island Rd. N at 2:23 AM on Tuesday morning.

The abandoned home suffered heavy damage to the front of the structure which was thought to be a total loss.

Rescue Divers Pull Man from Pick-Up Underwater in Columbia River

Witnesses reported that the pick-up sank quickly, but observed the man struggling to free himself from the vehicle through the rear window.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - The Multnomah County Dive Rescue Team in cooperation with Portland Fire & Rescue, and Port of Portland Fire & Rescue recovered the body of a 55-year-old Gresham man in the Columbia River at about 10:36 AM Tuesday.

Missing Wisconsin Boy Found Dead in Pond

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

(WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis.) - A 7-year-old autistic Wood County, Wis., boy who'd been reported missing since June 14th has been found dead, a Wisconsin official said today.

Benjamin Heil was the subject of a massive search conducted over the past several days by state and local officials, including Wisconsin and Michigan National Guard helicopters.

Heil's body was discovered by search dogs late this morning in a small pond located not far from his home in Saratoga, Wis.

U.S. Army Soldier from Hillsboro, Oregon Killed in Afghanistan

He leaves behind a wife and an 8-year-old daughter.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - A Hillsboro man is the 100th casualty with ties to Oregon in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Army Sgt. First Class Christopher Dale Henderson died Sunday in Panjway, Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.

He was 35.

Fire at Detroit Dam Powerhouse Halts Electricity Generation

(SALEM, Ore. ) - An electrical fire in the Detroit Dam powerhouse on the North Santiam River last night caused the shutdown of power generation equipment at the facility.

Memorial Service for Marion County Deputy Kelly Fredinburg Set

The memorial service is open to the public.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Memorial Service for Marion County Deputy Kelly Fredinburg will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, at the Salem Armory, located at 2320 17th Street N.E. in Salem.

The processional will go through the city of Salem and end at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, located on Aumsville Hwy SE in front of the Memorial Walls.

The procession will leave the Armory directly after the memorial service which starts at 2:00 PM and will end around 3:30 or 4:00 PM.
