Salem Hospital Auxiliary Announces Scholarship Winners

The named scholarships carry awards of $1,000 each.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Salem Hospital Auxiliary has awarded scholarships totaling $26,050 to 52 local area students.

Nine S.C. Firefighters Perish in Warehouse Fire

Arson is not suspected as the cause of the fire.

(CHARLESTON, S.C.) - Nine firefighters died Monday night in a fire that destroyed the Sofa Super Store in West Ashley in Charleston, South Carolina.

Two employees in the building were rescued from the blaze, which broke out at about 7:00 PM Monday. Firefighters punched a hole through a wall of the warehouse to reach them.

"Nine brave, heroic, courageous firefighters of the city of Charleston have perished fighting fire in a most courageous and fearless manner, carrying out their duties," Charleston Mayor Joe Riley.

Oregon to Participate in Dirty Bomb Response Drill

Two Injured in Head on Crash on I-5 Near Coburg

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

(COBURG, Ore. ) - Two people were injured in a two-vehicle head-on crash Monday afternoon on Interstate 5 north of Coburg.

At approximately 4:00 PM, a 1996 Ford Explorer was northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 210.

The Explorer crossed the median and collided head-on with a southbound 2005 Chevrolet Impala.

Hoover Elementary Health Center Receives Kaiser Permanente Grant

According to Oregon state statistics, about 40 percent of students served by school-based clinics aren't insured.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Kaiser Permanente Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to support the Hoover Elementary School Based Health Center.

The health center, Marion County's first SBHC, has completed its first school year and will be reopening in September 2007.

Wildfire Forces Evacuation of Oregon Campground

A fire truck, crashed and was destroyed after it rolled down a hill.

(THE DALLES, Ore. ) - A wildfire on about 2,500 acres of grassland led to the evacuation of some 50 people from a campground near the mouth of the Deschutes River.

The fire, was on private and U.S. Bureau of Land Management property.

It jumped the Deschutes River, which forms the boundary between Sherman and Wasco counties in north-central Oregon officials said.
