No. 25 Oregon State Advances to NCAA Super Regionals

OSU baseball season ticket holders have until Wednesday at 4 p.m. to reserve NCAA Super Regionals seats.

(CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.) - Oregon State beat seventh-ranked Virginia 7-3 on Tuesday afternoon to win the NCAA Charlottesville Regional baseball tournament.

Joe Paterson pitched a scoreless final three innings to earn a save to go with his two wins in the tournament for OSU (42-18 overall).

With the win, Oregon State advances to the NCAA Super Regionals for the third straight season.

Oregon Troops Home From War are Under Lockdown at Fort Carson

A number of Oregon Guard troops who have been at war in Afghanistan for the last year are unhappy about being placed in "a lockdown status" at Fort Carson, Colorado.

(Salem, Ore.) - The Army at Fort Carson apparently believes that a restriction is the best way to manage these soldiers who have returned home from war.

But family members say it is a slap in the face for Oregon Guard soldiers, known for their professionalism in a war where they were trusted to carry a live weapon everywhere they went for 365 days.

Police Say Man Assaulted Ex-Wife`s Sleeping Boyfriend with a Baseball Bat

At the time of the attack five children ranging in age from 4 years to 14 years old were in the apartment.

(SALEM, Ore.) - A Salem man is in custody over an assault with a baseball bat that police say happened just before 8:00 AM at 4493 Newcastle Circle NE in Salem.

Investigators say 27-year old Luz Nicolas and 29-year old Domingo Miguel-Linares, were asleep at Ms. Nicolas' apartment this morning just before 8:00 AM, when her ex-husband arrived.

Interlock Ignition Bill Inspired by MADD Passes Senate 30-0

House Bill 2774 is described as a positive step in reducing repeat drunk driving in Oregon.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon State Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Crime Victims United joined forces in providing extensive research and testimony on House Bill 2774 which extends the requirement for Ignition Interlock Devices for those convicted of driving drunk.

HB 2774 increases the time period for installation of the IID to one year for the first conviction and two years for the second and subsequent convictions. A sober driver must blow into the device and register little or no alcohol to allow the car to start; some devices require a combination of blowing, humming or sucking to start the vehicle.

Senate Passes Bills to Set Limits on Title and Payday Loans

Legislation will protect consumers from high interest rates and will extend protections to internet loans.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Oregon Senate passed House Bill 2203 Monday, legislation that extends consumer protection laws to companies offering loans to Oregon consumers through the mail, the internet or over the telephone.

Passage of the bill follows Senate passage on Friday of House Bill 2204, legislation that limits the interest rate on title loans to 36 percent per annum. Both bills are priorities of Governor Ted Kulongoski.

U.S Airline Delays Soar Over Last Year

The carriers filing on-time performance data reported that 7.72 percent of their April flights were delayed by aviation system delays.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The nation’s largest airlines recorded a rate of on-time flights this past April that was higher than in March but down from the rate posted in April 2006, according to the Air Travel Consumer Report released Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

According to information filed with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, a part of DOT’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration, the 20 carriers reporting on-time performance recorded an overall on-time arrival rate of 75.7 percent in April, down from April 2006’s 78.4 but an improvement over March 2007’s 73.3 percent.

Lightning Strikes Tree, Damages Three Homes

The lighting caused a Douglas fir tree, estimated to be at least 110-feet tall, to splinter into several sections.

(ALOHA, Ore. ) - A lightning strike at about 8:15 AM Monday, hit a large fir tree in the back yard of 20671 SW Anna Court, Aloha, causing the tree to explode into pieces and damaging at least three homes.

A 45-foot upper section of the tree fell against a home at 20688 SW Gracie Street.

Two homes adjacent to the Gracie Street residence suffered minor damage by flying debris.

Wyoming Senator Craig Thomas Loses Battle with Leukemia

Thomas was hospitalized with pneumonia just before the 2006 election, but won with 70 percent of the vote.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Republican three-term Senator Craig Thomas from Wyoming died Monday after a battle with leukemia.

Thomas had been receiving chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia at National Naval Medical Center.

The Senator's successor will be named by Wyoming Democratic Governor Dave Freudenthal.

Oregonians Invited to Fish for Free this Weekend

Gear, bait and basic angling instruction are provided at most events.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife staff encourage Oregonians and visitors to fish, crab and clam without a license during the 19th annual Free Fishing Weekend June 9th and 10th.

More than 40 Free Fishing Events will be held at sites throughout the state.

Most are geared toward introductory angling opportunities for young people.

Benton County Initiates New Youth Community Service/Work Crew Policy

In 2006, over 250 young people were ordered to complete community service or work crew.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - The Benton County Juvenile Department is initiating a new policy to reduce “no-shows” for youths court ordered to community service or work crews.

The new policy will add an additional day of community service or work crew for the first offense, a second offense the person will be sent to the Linn-Benton Detention Center.

The Benton County Juvenile Department manages community service and work crew projects for local non-profit and public service organizations.
