Man Walking Along Highway 101 Struck and Killed by SUV

There have been 8 confirmed traffic-related fatalities in four separate crashes on Oregon highways at the halfway point of this year's holiday weekend.

(BANDON, Ore. ) - Oregon State Police are continuing the investigation into a fatal traffic crash early Sunday morning in which a man was killed after he reportedly walked into the northbound lane of Highway 101 just north of Bandon and was struck by a sport utility vehicle.

Former Corban College Faculty Member Vic Hubbard Has Died

Dr. Richard Caulkins will direct the alumni choir with the old favorite choral song, "When He Shall Come."

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Vic Hubbard, beloved by many friends and Corban College alumni for the past several decades, passed away at his home with his family, on Saturday, May 26th.

For the past several weeks he had been in declining health -- afflicted with a respiratory ailment and was anticipating his homegoing.

The family has chosen to host a Celebration of Life service which will be held at the Psalm Performing Arts Center on the Corban campus, Friday June 1st, at 1:00 PM.

Four Family Members from Idaho Die in Crash at Oregon / Nevada border

Both the family and the truck driver were from Idaho.

(MCCERMOTT, Ore.) - Oregon State Police are continuing their investigation of a fatal traffic crash that resulted in the death of four members of a Nampa, Idaho family Friday evening. Their vehicle collided head-on with a commercial truck on Highway 95 about fifteen miles north of the Oregon / Nevada border.

"Both vehicles caught fire and were destroyed. Three victims were deceased at the scene, a fourth died enroute to a hospital, and the involved truck driver was not injured."

Racial Attack in Molalla Leaves One Man in Jail and Police Looking for Others

The attack appears to have been motivated by racist behavior and alcohol.

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - An 18-year-old Oregon City man is in Clackamas County Jail after allegedly assaulting a Hispanic male with a rock in an apparent act of racism. Police are looking for other suspects in the attack.

A Clackamas County Sheriff's Deputy responded to the 28000 block of S. Hwy. 213 in Molalla over a disturbance at the Wagon Wheel Park, Thursday at approximately 10:46 PM.

Rescuers Worried Wayward Whales Health is Rapidly Deteriorating

An intense herding operation is planned for Tuesday.

(RIO VISTA, Calif.) - Scientists were encouraged by the response of the two wayward whales to an experiment Friday morning involving streams of water projected from a fire boat.

The whales, a mother and her calf, have been meandering through the Sacramento Delta since May 13th, and scientists have become increasingly concerned about their health.

On Saturday, veterinarians and marine biologists will continue to conduct health assessment activities on the whales, which may involve sampling the skin and breath.

Oregon`s Pine Mountain Observatory Now Open

Visitors can learn how optical and digital technologies are used to investigate planets, stars and galaxies.

(BEND, Ore. ) - Star-gazing, planet-searching and constellation viewing are just a leisurely drive away at the Pine Mountain Observatory located about an hour's drive southeast of Bend.

The observatory, operated by the physics department of the University of Oregon, will be open through Sept. 29th for visitors to drop in on Friday and Saturday evenings, from dusk until late night, weather permitting.

PMO facility consists of three Cassegrain reflecting telescopes, with mirrors of 15-inch, 24-inch, and 32-inch diameters, each in its own domed building.

Road Rage Report Leads to Drug Arrest at Oregon Rest Area

A search of the backpack revealed approximately 2 1/4 pounds of marijuana and 2 1/2 ounces of cocaine.

(WILSONVILLE, Ore. ) - An 18-year old Pendleton-area resident was arrested Friday morning by an Oregon State Police trooper on marijuana and cocaine charges after a road rage complaint on Interstate 5 south of Wilsonville led to the discovery of over 2 pounds of Marijuana and more than two ounces of Cocaine.

At approximately 8:00 AM, OSP Trooper Jason Lindland responded to the northbound Interstate 5 Baldock rest area south of Wilsonville regarding a road rage incident.

Initial report alleged an individual threw liquid at the victim's vehicle followed by another person pointing a paintball gun.

Senior Skip Day Doesn`t Go as Planned for Bend Teen

Troopers also learned that the BMW was driving with two other vehicles, one of which apparently called the suspect on a cell phone to warn him OSP was trying to catch up to stop him.

(BEND, Ore. ) - An Oregon State Police trooper, with the help of local agencies participating in an interagency saturation patrol kicking off the holiday weekend, was able to find a high speed teenage driver who fled from an attempted traffic stop in the Bend area.

The driver was one of several area high school students taking part in Senior skip day, but now he will have to face a judge on reckless driving and speed-related citations.

OMSI Hosts Memorial Day Ceremony Honoring Veterans

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - OMSI will be holding its annual Memorial Day ceremony to commemorate those who served on the USS Blueback and other local veterans on Monday, May 28th at 1:00 PM in the courtyard behind OMSI. The event is open and free to the public.

The Memorial Day ceremony will include bagpipers and a color guard, tolling of the bells for lost boats, placing of the wreath, and retirement of the colors. The grand finale will be a water spray salute by a Portland fireboat. Members of the U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc. and the U.S. Submarine Veterans of W.W. II will attend. Navy in-shore patrol boat unit 13 will also be on display.

Police want to talk to anyone who may have seen or talked to 73-year old Kenneth W. Miller and 69-year old Betty Lou Japel in the last year. The couple traveled to Arizona frequently, the last place they were seen alive is Oregon.
