Fatal Crash Halts US-95 Traffic near California Border

State Police troopers say the highway is completely blocked to all traffic for an extended, unknown period of time.

(OREGON/CALIFORNIA State line) - Oregon State Police are on the scene of a fatal traffic crash at milepost 107 on U.S. Highway 95.

This section of Highway 95 is just north of Oregon / California border.

This crash is expected to severely disrupt travel plans that are leading people from Oregon to Reno, Nevada.

Dalton`s Law Denied Hearing by Senate Judiciary Committee

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon Rep. Donna Nelson expressed her disappointment with the Senate Judiciary Committee for refusing to hold hearings for Dalton’s Law.

“This bill has such strong support, having passed the House of Representatives unanimously—you’d think something so important as Dalton’s Law would at least merit a hearing in the Senate,” she stated.

Memorial Day F-15 Oregon Flyovers Announced

The Oregon Air National Guard has been an integral part of the nation's air defense since 1941.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - The Oregon Air National Guard will salute America's fallen heroes and veterans with flyovers for various ceremonies at locations throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington on Memorial Day.

Two F-15 Eagle jet fighters from the 142nd Fighter Wing will depart the Portland Air Base.

All passes will be approximately 1,000 feet above ground level and 350 knots airspeed.

Senate Passes Bill to Keep Junk Food Out of Oregon Schools

Standards set by the legislation would become effective in the 2008-2009 school year.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Oregon Senate today passed House Bill 2650, legislation that sets standards for what kind of snack food may be sold in schools.

Foods with fat and sugar content beyond a certain level will not be allowed in school vending machines or to be sold by school stores.

Under this legislation, food items would have to meet a standard of portion size and amount of calories, and be under a certain level of fat and sugar content.

Governor Orders Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of Memorial Day

88 Oregon service members have died while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom and the War in Iraq.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski ordered all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon on Monday, in memory of all Oregonians who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

“This Memorial Day gives us a chance to reflect on the Oregonians who are currently serving our country overseas,” said Governor Kulongoski.

The protocol for displaying the flag at half staff on Memorial Day is to raise the flag in the morning briskly to the top of the flag pole, then slowly lower it to the mid-way point of the pole.

Oregon House Approves Bottle Bill Reform

Because the House amended the bill, it will go back to the Senate for concurrence or further consideration.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Oregon House of Representatives on Thursday, approved the first major reform to the state’s landmark Bottle Bill since its inception in 1972. The updated Bottle Bill, SB 707, adds water and flavored-water bottles to the list of containers requiring a five-cent deposit upon purchase in Oregon.

When the legislature established the program in the early 1970’s, its aim was to reduce roadside litter.

Oregon’s Bottle Bill was the first of its kind in the nation.

Health Advisory Lifted for Water Contact at Oceanside Beach

State officials encourage recreational activities at all Oregon beaches, suggesting only that water contact be avoided when advisories are in effect.

(TILLAMOOK, Ore.) - A health advisory for contact with marine water at Oceanside Beach in Tillamook County was lifted today by the Oregon Department of Human Services, in conjunction with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

The advisory was issued May 22nd, after water samples at Oceanside Beach showed higher-than-normal levels of enterococcus, a type of fecal bacteria, in the marine water. Subsequent testing showed the contamination had subsided and the waters did not pose a higher-than-normal risk associated with water-contact activities.

Eight OSP Troopers to Graduate from First-Ever Fully Integrated Basic Police Class

OSP was asked by the Legislature and Governor to run all new troopers through the single, statewide training program.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Oregon State Police will graduate eight troopers from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) basic police training program, Friday, May 25, for the first time ever.

The morning graduation ceremony marks completion of the first fully-integrated basic police class facilitated by DPSST – which provides statutorily-required, basic training to newly-hired city police officers, county sheriff's deputies and OSP troopers.
