Kids and Economy to Benefit from New Federal Health Funding

Report shows benefits to Oregon's kids and the economy if Congress makes good on budget promise for health care.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - Oregon could receive about $549 million in new federal funds over the next five years to expand children's health coverage and improve the state economy, according to a new report by Families USA, a national consumer health organization.

The additional funding would mean that Oregon could triple its federal funding for the State Children's Health Insurance Program, known by its acronym, SCHIP ("ess-chip").

Log Truck Driver Receives Serious Injuries in Crash on Highway 36 Near Triangle Lake

(BLACHY, Ore.) - Police say a truck driver was seriously injured Today when he lost control of his loaded log truck and rolled off Highway 36 near milepost 30 in the area of Blachly. The driver and his dog were entrapped in the truck for about three hours until being freed by firefighters.

More Oregon Guard Troops Return Home Tonight from Afghanistan

This deployment marked the largest wartime deployment of Oregon Army National Guardsmen since World War II when the 41st Infantry Division was mobilized for service.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - More than 60 soldiers from the Oregon Army National Guard's 41st Brigade Combat Team are scheduled to return to Oregon tonight between 11:30 PM 12:30 AM.

Guard Spokesman Capt. Mike Braibish, says The contract flight will land at the Portland Air National Guard Base. The soldiers will then be transported to the Jackson Armory located at 6255 NE Cornfoot Road in Portland, Ore. where their families and friends are invited to await their arrival for the initial welcome home.

Driver Life Flighted After Single Car Rollover in Canby

The victim was found in her seatbelt after rolling 6 to 8 times.... which firefighters say probably saved her life.

(CANBY, Ore.) - Canby Firefighters were dispatched to a one car rollover around 5:30 PM at the intersection of Hwy 170 and Heinz.

Canby Fire District Spokesman Troy Buzalsky says they initial dispatch reported that the vehicle had rolled over 6 to 8 times before landing on its tires.

When firefighters arrived they found an 18-year old female driver who was injured and required extrication from her vehicle, which was in the middle of a tall grassy field.

Salem Fire Crews Rescue Injured Man from Roof

The patient was recovered and taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Salem Fire Department responded to 365 Commercial St NE at approximately 3:00 PM on Thursday, May 24th, 2007 to rescue an injured man on top of a building.

Deputy Fire Marshal Jeff Mack says the first crews on scene found a person injured on top of a building.

"Due to the limited access to the roof the firefighters had to use alternative means to extract the injured person from the roof."

Vancouver, Washington Police Make Arrest in Teen`s Homicide

(VANCOUVER, Wa.) - Detectives from the Vancouver Police Department Major Crimes Team charged 19-year old Stetzon W. Sharp today in connection with one count of Controlled Substance Homicide. This is the result of the investigation into the death of Shelby Howard on May 5th, 2007.

During the investigation, detectives say they learned that Sharp had allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a handgun on the morning of May 4th. Detectives served a search warrant on Sharp's vehicle and recovered a handgun.

Beer Truck Crash Closes Oregon Highway 58 East of Oakridge

The truck came to rest on its top on the highway as the trailer fell off an embankment and tumbled approximately 400 feet downhill. The driver was not injured.

(OAKRIDGE, Ore.) - A truck driver from the Aloha-area escaped injury Wednesday night after losing control of his commercial truck hauling beer on Highway 58 east of Oakridge. The truck overturned and trailer separated before it went down an approximate 400 foot embankment spilling its contents.

Police say the crash happened Wednesday at approximately 9:30 PM, it involved a 2000 Volvo truck towing a semi-trailer loaded with beer was westbound on Highway 58 near milepost 54.

Guard`s Lack of Equipment Puts U.S. at Risk, Chief Says

Currently, equipping the Army and Air National Guard is managed by the respective services, and levels are based on units' wartime missions. This causes problems when states respond to multiple requirements.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Congress must either fund equipment for the National Guard or accept the risks of an under-equipped strategic reserve, the Guard's top officer said today.

The Guard has only about half of the equipment it needs, Army National Guard Lt. Gen. H Steven Blum, chief of the National Guard Bureau, testified before the House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security's subcommittee on management, investigations and oversight.
